:1zhelp: I've had seven "mechanics" look at my car all giving me differant things to change / try, so I hope someone out there can help !!! ?
1993 MK3 GOLF 1.8 CL AUTO:
On start up very chuggy / wont idle, for about 5 minutes (this is worse when cold but also happens when shes warm), I loose power when driving then it comes back (being an automatic this aint good).
after about 5 minutes she runs as she should.
I've changed so far: HT LEADS / PLUGS / DIZZY CAP / ROTA ARM / COIL / LITTLE AIR SENSOR (AT REAR OF AIR BOX) / SINGLE POINT INJECTION UNIT + RUBBER MOUNT / LOADS OF CARB CLEANER THROUGH HER / (tried another temp sensor NOT a new one but didn't make any differance)
Someone has said about disconnecting the temp sensor done this no differance
Also just put a new fuel filter on her and a new fiel pump no differance !!!!!!!
THIS IS DOING MY HEAD IN GUYS ANYONE GOT ANY SUGESTIONS OR DOES SOMEONE WANT TO BUY A 1993 GOLF 1.8 CL AUTO 60,000 MILES
there is no MAFS on the car like on the newer ones only the little air sensor at the rear of the air box changed this so what could it be :zx11:
Sounds like you have covered most things. (P.S. I know nothing about your engine but have mended lots of my old cars!!)
Questions: The single point injection unit, does have an intrgral throttle plate / butterfly ? If it is a separate throttle butterfly it may need cleaning.
Also with it being an older car, you probably have an idle control valve, I'd look at cleaning this and checking all vacuum lines.

Hi BigCol
Thanks for your post, I'm no mechanic but I believe it has a butterfly in the middle of the single point injection(a round disk on a spindle) this was all cleaned when I put the new unit on / idle control valve I'm not sure about wouldn't know where that was / vaccumm pipes dont seem to be leaking had them all off too

being a 93 model, would this not have a carb? have you checked that your timing is ok?
have you checked your fuel mixture is as it ought to be?
when was the last time this car was serviced, could be a whole host of things which are normally covered under a service. i have heard that dirty plugs can cause problems in their own right.
can i also ask that you dont keep reposting the same problem under a different title, just keep updating the same thread, otherwise we end up with 100's of different threads dotted around the forum and people searching for the same answer will have endless trouble trying to find it.....thanks ;)
**edit** sorry, just read that you have changed plugs. am i right in what im reading.... the car is poor for the first 5 minutes, but after that runs fine, with no problems whatsoever?

check the fuel pressure,re adapt the idle valve. There is a tool that i cant for the life of me remember that connects to the valve and direct battery live, you connect it all up an it resets the travel on the plunger for the position of the butterfly position.Sorry i cant rememjber the tool number but if you gain access to workshop manual singlepoint injector systems its in there. Also heated lambda probe may be defective. What are the emmisions running at,on the early models it was possible to measure up stream of the catalyst as well as out the tail pipe.If Iam correct it should be .50 at the tail pipe at idle and temp 80.Iam going of memory here and its a long time since ive worked on old golfs.Hook it up and check the fuel to air ratio as well and the hydrocarbons as these will give you a very good indication as to what is happening.

Thanks for post, err your losing me now dont have access to emmissions read out and I'm trying to avoid paying VW £100.00 to do a check to tell me they cant find nowt wrong but they will investigte further for another £200.00 lol, I want to sell the car for £400.00 not £700.00 it aint worth that !just thought it would be a simple fix ie. changing a part from a scrappie
