Just bought a cabriolet with a 2.3E I5 and now doing the timing belt, pump etc. When we pulled of the old one we noticed that the timing belt was only about 2/3 -3/4 seated on the teeth and had evidently rubbed against the cover.
Installed new belt and ran engine for 10 mins - all good but noticed that the belt was again sliding forward - off the sprocket.
Slightly worrying - wondering whether there should be a large washer on the crank sprocket that keeps it running straight or whether there is something that we have missed.
Logic says that the problem lies in the layout between the crank sprocket and the pulleys but how?
Anyone have an ideas?
Update:It seems that the top (camshaft) sprocket is out of true and pulling the belt out. The (temporary) fix is to have the timing belt fractionally slacker than normal.
