View Full Version : Timing belt sliding off

Just bought a cabriolet with a 2.3E I5 and now doing the timing belt, pump etc. When we pulled of the old one we noticed that the timing belt was only about 2/3 -3/4 seated on the teeth and had evidently rubbed against the cover.
Installed new belt and ran engine for 10 mins - all good but noticed that the belt was again sliding forward - off the sprocket.

Slightly worrying - wondering whether there should be a large washer on the crank sprocket that keeps it running straight or whether there is something that we have missed.

Logic says that the problem lies in the layout between the crank sprocket and the pulleys but how?
Anyone have an ideas?

Update:It seems that the top (camshaft) sprocket is out of true and pulling the belt out. The (temporary) fix is to have the timing belt fractionally slacker than normal.

having the timing belt slightly slack is never a good idea, the manufacturers set the tension specifically to each model and you dont know any better (sorry). You have a choice, either take the car to an Audi garage or read up yourself and do any repairs yourself. I'll get put in my place now but is it possible the previous owner did thier own maintanence and fitted the pulleys the wrong way round, just a thought

Fair comment. As mentioned v.slight slackness was a (very) temporary fix.
Had genius plan of checking pulley for warping etc - probably should have looked at that earlier turns out it is very out true. One new pulley and bolt later she looking good.
Turns out that at some point previously it had been incorrectly tightened/installed so stretching the bolt and subsequently warping the pulley.

Who knew?
Now waiting for next piece of "character" to appear
