Hi

I recently started getting a strange noise from my 51k miles golf tdi140 mk5.

Took the car to an independant garage and explained the situation there. My wife and I took the car to Switzerland and long and short managed to drop the car off a high kurb. On inspection there did not seem to be any visible damage however the car started to make a rumbling noise shortly afterwards.

The noise has got worse and worse (especially after riving 800 miles home!) . The garage today confrirmed there was nothing wrong with drive shafts wheel bearings suspension etc, however the noise still remains. The noise seems to happen when the throttle is not pressed and when turning corners and can sometimes be a loud clicking sound. They removed the gearbox oil today and said there was a lot of metal in it, and they believed there was something shot in there.

I have a few questions.

1) Anyone had the gearbox on this model changed, and how much did it cost?

2) Can anyone think of anything else which needs to be checked?

3) Anyone had any joy with refurbed gearboxes and can recommend a retailer in the Wiltshire/Berkshire area?

Obviously if the gearbox is shot I would prefer to avoid the 2k ish charge VW will be quoting if the gearbox has died.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

hi mate sorry to hear about the gearbox problem, now if its clicking going round corners that normal points to a furbed driveshaft joint, as for removing the box its about a 4/4 and half hour job to take the box out and refit it so at are place labour would be between £120 to £135 plus vat not sure what a main ******* would charge tho, what gets me is the noise you have described and what happened falling off a kerb makes me think its CV joint related rather than gearbox, there are a few places that do this sort of thing (rebuild boxs) shame your so far away, cos in tavistock in devon there a one man band that rebuilt a 6sp passat box for us and the total bill was £225 hope this helps mate

:Blush:Thanks mate! Still not figured out what is boken yet. The garage don't seem to know aht's causing the problem.

I agree with you though. The gearbox seems to be working fine.

Thanks again - anyone know any good gearbox places in the SouthWest?

Cheers

Chris

Is the noise/rumble coming from the same side that dropped off the curb? if so then i would take an educated guess that the force of the drop has managed to cause some sort of impact damage to either the outer cv joint or the wheel bearing?
It would be worth getting the hub, bearing and cv joint checked out on the offending side before stumping for an expensive gearbox job?
If you jack up the noisey side so the wheel is off the ground and leave the other wheel on the ground (hand brake on and using an axle stand of course!) Start the engine and put it in say 3rd or 4th gear and let the clutch out so the wheel is being driven then have a listen for noises while someone is turning the steering through full lock, this is usualy a good way of detecting bearing and cv joint problems/faults.
If you dont feel confident enough to do this yourself suggest it to your garage and they will perform the check for you.
Hoipe this helps......

Phil.
