Hi

I purchased an 05 Golf 2.0 fsi gt a couple of days ago with 21k on it.

This morning at 60MPH the ESP light came on and slowed the car down to 40, pulled over and the idle was rough.

Swiched off, restarted and it was fine.

Its back at the garage I bought it from now and they are telling me that after they plugged it into the diagnostic there was no fault code?

I've read a few posts about faulty coil packs etc but prior to this mornings problem its been great.

Obviously a bit worried that a may have bought a wrong un, could anyone tell me it its possible for the ESP light to kick in as discribed and not show a fault code or offer another non coil related answer?

Any help appreciated

hi mate, it could be a number of things, the ESP light coming on may have nothing to do with an engine fault (the rough idle could very well be because the ESP light came on) now it should have stored a code and at a guess id say ABS unit fault, this is a fairly common fault with these's cars, i hope its not that but thats where id start looking first

Thanks Phil, i'll check out the ABS as thats not one that i've seen. I'm betting thats not cheap tho.

I'm concerned that it can engage limp mode without showing a fault code according the local garage I bought it from. If there no code how can I get them to fix it, any one know it there lying and would it be worth taking it to a franchised dealer?

it should show a code, ive had in the past similar faults to yours and a code ive seen a few times is brake pressure sensor which is in the ABS unit, if it is that then VW will charge loads, but it will need to be coded to the car, IMHO it should have a code and maybe the dealer is aware of the ABS unit fault and is hoping it goes away
