Anyone got any advice on how often you need to go for a longer run in between urban driving to avoid clogging and regens ? .

It doesn't have to be a long run just enough to burn the carbon off. If I remember right the handbook states what to do. ;)

Thanks keithuk , have read hand book already 2k rpm for 15mins e.t.c but wondered if most of my driving is urban if i would need to go for a blast once a week or may be 2 weeks to keep the DPF healthy ? dont want to be travelling around just for the sake of it and using extra fuel .

I maybe wrong but my understanding is that the cleaning takes place every 500 miles or so.
It therefore makes no difference if you decide to go on a 'long run' to clean the filter since no cleaning may take place.
I commute 120 miles a day to work and a couple of weeks ago I did a shortish trip and parked up. It's a new car and at that time had around 550 miles on the clock. The engine fan came on, which was quite loud, and there was a strange smell in the air. I am 99% certain that was the cleaning taking place which just happened to occur as I was parking up.
As I say, I might be wrong, but that's my understanding reading about DPF cleaning.
If you read KeithUK's link about the DPF, it states "...The DPF continues to collect soot particles until a predetermined level is reached." I would have thought a predetermined level implies 'after a certain milage' which will be different for each individual depending upon driving style, urban or rural driving etc.

Paul - We don't really know anything about your car, model, age, mileage. Most users on here put their spec in there signature.
I read on one forum that one guy had is new car for 3 days and the light came on. I only do local running its only 4.5 miles to work. I do give it a run up the motorway every couple of weeks or so just to warm it up properly and clear it out. I've never had the light come on.
If the light does come on just give it a blast up the motorway, what could be simpler? ;)

Keith - do pretty much same mileage to work as yourself plus the odd decent run at weekend , was just a little concerned of long term build up of unburned soot and residue ash in filter and may be probs compounding in the future . my car has already idled at 1k rpm and cooling fan stayed on , active regen but no light on as yet .

I've had the same symptoms several times. No light for me either. See my post here: http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=92364
Quite a common experience if you read the posts. You'd think VW would tell you about it.

I'm not sure thats about the same thing Steve, there is only one mension of DPF and its only about the smell it can cause.
There are actually 360 threads that mension DPF if you search and none on here. ;)

My DPF light came on a while back, checked the manual and basically says you should screw it a bit (not in so many words ;)) ragged it around in 2nd for about 3 mins and the light went away and happy days :D
