rear windows falling down on their own

i have a 96 golf auotmatic and have had this problem since i bought it but it is getting much worse.

both the rear back windows will fall down as im driving, not all the way down striahgt away, just slowly fall down till thy get half way down then slam all the way down and i have to pull them up again because when i use the button to push them up it does nothing. however when i push the button for them to go down it goes down like normal. i can also just slide the window open from the outside by pushing it down with my hand with very little effort.

could anyone tell me the problem? how to fix it? and if it will be expensive or not.

the windows are fixed to regulators,if the windows are moving on their own either the cables on the regulators are streched or broken or the windows have come adrift from the regulators,the best thing to do is to remove the door trims and have a look.its fairly common for the regulators to go,usualy in winter when operating the windows when frozen etc.
