Hi, dont know if anyone can help me, but I recently volunteered to repair a friends electric windows in a w-reg VW Golf. All four windows have broken which I think maybe something to do with some brackets / runners or the regulator. You can hear the electric motor operating but the window either stays put or drops & stays down entirely. Apparantely this is quite a common fault in vw's and I know it's quite expensive to sort at the garage so I thought I'd give it a go. Because its not my car and its used daily I'm limited as to the time period I can sort it in. I've done previous window repairs to much older cars but they were a lot more basic than this car. Does anyone have any info they can e-mail me to help speed up the process as I fear I may have bitten of more than I can chew with this one?
Thanks in advance

hi, this is a common problem, it happened to me - Front passenger side!
Me and my bro fixed it and it was a job and a half trying to take the door panel off, you have to be careful due to all the electrics wires. The brackets had broken and when i went to get replacements they said because they were plastic i had to replace the whole inside panel which cost me about £90 but apparently you can just get clips but im not sure!
Oh yeah getting the speaker spacer off was a nite mare they are rivoted in, need to be drilled out (mind you i cant remember if we had to do that for this problem coz i had my speakers changed too) and make sure you remember where the wires go...
Good luck!.

Thanks for your reply, I've now done the work. Took me and a friend six hours to do the two front windows on a very hot day. What often happens is that the original runners (white brittle plastic channels) easily break and need to be replaced with the newer black rubber ones. Worst bit was keeping the cable's held in place and pulled taut enough to fit. I was Knackered afterwards, but now consider myself a bit of an expert and could easily do it in half the time. Cost = £33.70 per front window for replacement runners and cables. P.s. Definitely a two person job.
