Hi All, I need some advice... Just purchased a 1.6 2001 VW Golf, which was leaking coolant (a whole container gone over night). We took it into a VW Garage where they said we needed to replace the water pump & the cambelt & Tensioner. They carried out the work for around £400. When we checked with the previous owner (a family member) they told us the cambelt was only changed last year (10,000 miles ago) and that we had been ripped off. Can anyone tell me if this is right, and if so, what to do about it??

Thanks for reading.

As you probably know if the cambelt lets go it's a big expense to fix. The belt that was fitted has done 10,000 miles and has been tensioned once already. I don't think you've been ripped off as the garage probably wouldn't want to guarantee the work refitting such a vital thing. Garages usually change the tensioner at the same time as well.
Hope this puts your mind at rest

With Boardboy here. My Pasty was/is under warranty, the water pump went and was repaired under the warranty. The dealer suggested as the car was near it's cambelt change to have it done too, as the engine was stripped down for the water pump anyway. He only charged me about £100 for that.
