secondary air injection system

hi all,
quick question:
I'm getting a incorrect flow fault on my secondary air injection system. Is my assumption that this will just mean that it will take longer for the cat to get up to the correct working temperature correct? Or could i actually damage the cat by driving it? It's only a intermitent problem, cleared it once and it only came back after a couple days.
