Hi,
Are all Avant this noisy when open a rear window?
When driving with more than 40mph, and open a rear window, there is some awful noise.
Like banging in a big drum.
bum-bum-bum
And it's pumping in my ears.
NO NO NO, it's not my CD player. I'm not a music listener.
So loud that I can't drive even 10 seconds with the window open.
I was thinking to buy some wind deflectors.
Anybody knows if these will solve the noise?
Regards.

The deflectors would cause so much increase in the drag factor you would see the fuel gauge drop. Turn your A/C on to a sensible temperature and close the windows. Regards Peter
Try opening the other rear window just a crack at the same time. It might be enough to upset the harmonics of the airflow and stop the buffeting.

Most cars I've owned get a drumming type buffetting at speed with the rear windows open. Either open one of the front windows an inch, or as Peter says, use the climate control for what it was intended. It's more economical to use a/c at speed than to have the windows open.

Thanks for answers,
The AirCon gives me some nasty feeling inside my throat.

Throat problems may be caused by bacteria growing on the condensor.
You need an aircon service to kill them, or you could DIY with a "bomb" from Halfords which you leave in the car while the a/c is running, or DIY with some dettol spray.
I haven't done either of these, but I've seen "how-to"s, or my main dealer just quoted me £130 to do mine (which seems to me to be working fine)

To answer the original question. I have a 98 avant and my mate has a 2000 avant quattro and they both have buffetting with the rear windows open. If you open one front window slightly the noise goes BUT then you get the normal wind noise from the front.
This is less of a problem.....Just turn up the music.....
