how olds the car and what engine is it?
it might be burning oil on the part of loads of smoke

the burning of oil would be down to the turbo "going pop", no doubts about that.
as regards "other damage", i can't think of any more mechanical damage that would have been caused, although the intercooler will be full of oil,and may be goosed if parts of turbo
managed to reach it.
other than that, you need to think of oil affecting sensors, and i'm not too well versed on that side of things,

stewy.

ok.. turbo back in and working but lots of smoke coming from the exhaust, audi think its as there is oil in the exhaust system. The lady in service said that this should burn off in time... is this an accurate statement?
if so how much time? couple of hours hard drive on the motorway? or a couple of months?

Did they remove and clean the intercooler. What colour is the smoke and when does it smoke, at idle, under load, on the over-run, when. Regards Peter

Whilst i wait for them to come back.. I presume that if they havent cleaned the intercooler then they need to?
how big a job is that in terms of man hours?

ok they have come back to me.. smokes all the time and the smoke is grey.
they took off the boost pipes and let the oil run out, they informed me that is where the oil would have dranied to.
i dont think they have left it running for any amount of time as the smoke would fill the workshop?
they have suggested just to leave it ticking over on my drive and the remaining oil (that they suggest is in the exhaust) should burn off... they said not to tank down the motorway as was my thought on the matter.

If it was me doing the work on my own car, I'd probably clean the oil from the intercooler, boost pipes and inlet manifold, but leave any which had got through to the exhaust to burn itself off.
