overall length, width etc is the same.
only you can decide wether you need the extra doors, or which one looks best

IMO 3 door looks best, although 5 door is obviously a little more practical =)

are you sure the 3dr and 5dr are the same length?
the 5dr looks longer than the 3dr and much longer than a vw golf mkv
which has the best resale value and is most in demand a 3dr or 5dr?
I have a 3 door, as I never have any back seat passengers. It's just a work commute, occassional van, dogs in the boot, and misses in the passenger seat sometimes.
I prefer the profile of a 3 door, but the back of a 5 door, but the 3 door won anyway as it's a nice spec and it came along at the right time. Recently had it remapped too which has transformed the car.

IMO - 3 door wins hands down.
There's no significant difference in the size of the 3 & 5 door cars, just one has easy access to the rear seat.

If you regularly have back seat passengers or want the ability to carry largish loads then the 5 door is more flexible.
Down to personal choice in the end ! :biglaugh:

The wheelbase is identical, I think the overall lenghth of the 5dr is something like 4/5 centimetres longer - as near as makes no difference!

Sportback is longer by 83mm and it does make a difference having owned 3dr and Sportback - The better package is the Sportback if you take more than 2 people with you on a regular basis

This. If you ever have people in the back then the extra shoulder room as well as easier access for the 5 door is soo useful. The extra boot space is also nice. But if you're the only occupant then no reason to carry the extra weight around with you (though I suspect the sportback is slightly more aerodynamic in counter).

The sportback A3 is a lot nicer looking then the 3dr it looks like a mini A6 Avant due to the rear lights.
I always had 3dr cars including a 3dr mk6 but the sportback was my first 5 dr and I love its look and design over the 3dr also better for my mum she now actually enjoys coming in my car :o
