I recently received a letter from the dealers saying that my '06 1.6 petrol mkV is due

(i) A Cambelt replacement (every 4 years)
and
(ii) Brake Fluid Replacement (every 2 years)

My wife phoned up todays to get a price and make an appointment and, the good news, was told that as it's an FSI it doesnt require the cambelt changed and also as I had suffered the renowned ESP light problem last year the brake fluid would have been changed as part of this (related to the ABS ???) so it didnt need this doing either.

Whilst I am quite happy with the brake fluid explanation (although I have no documentation to prove that this was done) I did query the cambelt issue as my vehicle does not state fsi anywhere on it (as far as I know). Is there any way in which I can tell that it is an FSI as all of the ones that I have see have this on a badge on the back whereas mine just has the normal Golf badge ??

Find your engine code and from this code you will positvely ID your engine type it will be something like BKN or BFN it is also in your VIN No.
FSI 's normally have a chain driven cam.
Post the engine type and someone will confirm to you

Cheers, the engine is a 1.6 petrol but the VIN number doesn't contain anything along the lines of BKN or BFN.. It does start WVW, don't know if that's what you're after ???

Actually just looking through the documentation for the car the engine is a BLF and it is referenced as an 1.6 S FSI, so I guess that I'm just after confirmation that this is a chain rather than a belt.

thanks

HI
To find the engine code it will be on the data sticker in the wheel well or front of service book. i think it would be BLF or BLS
Hope this helps.

So can anyone confirm that this is a chain and save me a few quid ?

If your engine code is confirmed as BLF then I confirm it is defiantly a chain driven cam.
Send me a PM with an email addy and I will send you a pic of the engine assembly. Regards
