View Full Version : 2009 A4 2.0 TDI S Line Multi ... LOW MPG!!!

Hi guys,
Desperately need some advice and no better place than here.
Just purchased a USED 2009 Audi A4 2.0 TDI 143 S line Multitronic 3 days ago.
Traded in my old 2004 Golf 2.0 GT TDI 140bhp Mk5 Manual in for it.
Over the last few days I have been doing several trips to Leeds from Bradford and back (26 miles both ways on mainly A roads).
Problem is that no matter how light footed I am (and believe me I am very light footed!!) I can never get better than 33 mpg on each run. On the Golf I could easily get around 48 mpg!!!
Am i right in thinking that something just aint right??!! Would it be a good idea to ring up the local ******** (Bradford) to run a check since the car is still under warranty. Currently on 45300 miles and last serviced in March 2010 at 37000 miles. Service indicator says the car still needs to go another 10000 miles for next oil and inspection service. The car has full dealer history by the way ( prev services at 20,000 and 9,500)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
Cheers.

it's much less than I get from mine on similar trips. I get high 30's to low 40's mpg wise. I only get low to high 40's mpg wise on dual carriage way or the motorway.
What sort of speeds were you doing?
Have you checked the tyre pressures? I had new fronts on mine and they'd put in slight too much air and I lost 8mpg overnight.
Anyone else?

Hi chucky and welcome again.
I came from a B7 manual 140 TDI to my 143 Multi and intially was shocked with the MPG and put it down to a tight new engine.
I have no covered 11k miles and it is getting better and better.
I travel 8 urban miles to work and manage 41-47.
Recent jaunt over 200 miles (A and dual) 51.
Normal A road traveling always upper 40's.
Really Tonking it using paddles mid 30's.
Secret.......USE CRUISE in 'D' WHENEVER you can.
Also you will gain a greater understanding of the gearbox once you have a few '000 under your foot.
For me the the gearbox is fantastic and makes a great cat even better.
In 'M' it's getting swift and is great fun. Having 8 ratio's to play with always make me smile and ensures what power the engine has is always on tap.
Bare with it, learn the gearbox and trust me it will improve, don't try and drive like a manual.
I am sure a certain member responsible for me buying a Lava Multi will be along soon to comment.
Enjoy

Thanks for the responses guys. Just been on the phone with my local *******. Trying to get the looked at. Might even get the oil + filter + deisel filter changed to see if it makes any difference. Waiting for them to call me back while they do some 'research'.
My problem is no matter where and how I drive I cannot touch 40 mpg!!!!

ummmm.....like I said you do need to learn the gearbox and how to maximise its effeciency.
As tungstentim says check tyres. I run 39psi all round

Sounds very odd only getting 33mpg!! I had an Octy II DSG 2.0tdi which was similar in size weight and engine and even though I am not particularly light footed, I averaged 44-46 mpg. I should add I live inside the M60 of Manchester too, so I do a lot of ‘built up area’ driving. Currently I am running in my new 3.0tdi and not only is it a heavy lump of a car and a much bigger engine, but I can coax 40+ with a lightish right foot. Sound like something is up with your car to be only averaging 66% of my mpg!

Again thanks for the great response and advice guys!! Around the streets I am getting 23-24 mpg. Outer city ring road 34 mpg at best with very light foot. Trying to learn the gearbox but surely can't be that hard??!! I have noticed that when I stop at a give-way or traffic lights , then mpg drops superfast (compared to my golf). Have arranged to get it checked at my local Audi dealer on July 9. Just wondering whether it might be worth getting an oil service ( last was done 8k miles ago).
Cheers.

Doesn’t sound right, my 3.0tdi is better than that. Managed 48.7 coming back from Leicestershire last week. I get low - mid 30’s round town and normally around 40 on motorway. Average over 10,000 miles is 37mpg.

Just out of curiosity I wonder what size tyres you guys with 18 inch wheels have. Mine are 245/40/18. I thought the Audi S line came with 225/40 as my tyres do look big and might a contributor to the low mpg . Please feel free to correct me. Cheers.

I got 52 MPG in my manual 143 2.0 TDi B8 Avant on a 150 mile run from leeds to cambridge and back again today. I bought the car second hand with 34k on it at the start of March. Since then I've covered 8.5k and averaged 46 MPG. I use the cruise whenever I can as this appears to help a lot....i am partial to getting heavy with the right foot on occasions tho.... ;)
I know the auto's are thristier but sounds like a problem to me...have you tried to do a real world measurement? I know little about these things but maybe your DIS calibration is up the spout...? Is it running smooth?

The engine is running quite smooth which is one of the first things I noticed when test driving. Doing a real world calculation tells me i am getting 30 mpg since 5.5 gallons in my car have kicked out 167 miles of very light footed driving. Used to getting 220 ish in my Golf mk5 on similar light footed runs!! This is drivingme crazy now and I'm feeling a little depressed as Audi have said that noone has complained about low mpg yet!! Well I haveasked thrm to do an oil service anyway when they check my car on the 6thJuly!!! P.s. Also problem with vibrating steering when parking!!!

All being well (car healthy and you driving conservatively) I cant see how you could be getting 30 mpg over any kind of run, let alone a long dual carriageway one. Keep plugging away with the dealership and make sure you get things bottomed out before your warranty runs out...

Can I ask what tyre pressures are people runing in their 3.0 TDI A4?
Although mine has 245/45/17 tyres, does the profile effect what pressure you use?
I tryed the recomendations printed on the drivers door sticker, but I think there too hard?
Although after I got my car back from its first service the Audi dealer had reduced them to only 33 psi all round? I think at the moment with me only driving and no lugage I have 36 in rear and 39 in front?

i know yours is multi but my a4 2008 2.0tdi manual was equally pants, around town mid-high 20s at most and at 70-80 on 15 mile motoroway run its only just creeping up to 42 mpg now at most. The ca runs smooth and no issues were found!
Anyhow it goes back on lease at end of July and then economy is a non-existent word as the C63 amg arrives:D

i run the fully loaded pressure on the 18's. This is what the handbook advises....Is a tad harder but you get used to it. The profile does affect the pressure used.

Hi there,
Ok , I think I am going to replace/clean the air filter. There is a lot of dirt under the bonnet and the engine bay is filthy. Chances are the air filter will be full of muck too. See if that might be the problem causing the low mpg. Should be straight forward enough although there is one screw under the pipe that seems hard to get to. Not many guides about either. Wish me luck and I will let you all know how I have got on. Cheers for the advice in the meantime.

4 mile commute into work this morning it was reading 44.7, although I know it is normally 5% to the good out.

Mate I should have pulled a pic of my filter at 45k. After seeing it I am sure that we'll be all changing at 20k. It's only £15 so why wait till 40ks. By the way my mpg has definatley improved after cleaning the filter by around 4-5%. hope putting a new one in tomorrow after the England game will earn me another 3-4% and that would be problem solved!!

OK GUYS.. AN UPDATE...
Car was at dealers yesterday to investigate :
1) Poor Mpg ( I am getting mid to late 20's around town, and 38 mon motorway crusing at 50-60) averaging at 29.7 overall
2) Steering Vibration all the time whilst parking
3) Headlight Condensation on the inside when it rains
4) Oil Service
Bradford Audi had my car since 8 am in the morning, only for them to carry out JUST the oil service at around 4 pm. I asked them if they investigated the poor mpg and I got a very unclear answer. The technician said that he didnt take any actual 'readings' as he needed 'more time' with the car.
Secondly, he said the steering judder was 'normal' whilst parking and there wasnt anything they could do about it.
Interestingly, they loaned me an Audi A4 2.0 TDi SE Auto For the day - Same engine as my car and transmission - except upon driving the car to work and back I was immediately getting 44 to work and 48 back!!! Not just that but the car was very responsive!!! After picking up my car yesterday evening, mine seemed sluggish and heavy immediately... and there seems to be input lag (when i touch the accelerator - the car seems to respond about a 1-2 seconds later).. I am not paranoid... please help... dont know what to do now!!!

As you will see from your tyre thread what your loaner did today is the same area as I achieve

Wow that seems like poor dealer service to me. Perhaps a polite but firm letter to the Dealer Principle might do the trick (they do take notice of these things), if not I’d ring another dealer and offer them my service business if they are willing to do a proper investigation of your problems. From what you have written it seems 99% likely that you have a major fault, especially as my 3,0tdi is achieving better mpg in all situations and not just by a small amount. The only good thing I can think of, is a big fault is often easier to fix, as it isn’t just something a little out of tolerance or slightly ‘unwell’ and therfore difficult to trace.
Good luck

Two clear options here:
1. Get them to take it back at a time when the loaner is also available. They can carry out a like-for-like road test! Once demonstrated, you can take the loaner until the issues are fixed.
2. Start using a new dealer.
Hope you get it sorted asap.

Cheers for all the advice and encouragement!! Really really appreciate! Have the car booked in again on 22 July so that I can also get a loaner. I like the idea of getting them to do a like for like test, cheers will definitely recommend this to them! Just a not. I uncoupled the connector to the MAF and noticed oil on it. Not sure it should be oily since it's electrical!! Anyway I cleaned it then plugged back in. Took car for a quick spin and definitely seemed nippier!! Don't know whether it's just coincidence though.
Cheers once again.

Thanks for the responses guys. Did I mention that the car had a 'clogged' fuel filter which was changed last week? Secondly in and around town in Bradford I am still getting about 28 mpg!! Although today I did achieve 32 mpg today as the wife mentioned that I was driving the A4 much quicker than the Golf. As pitch mentioned earlier perhaps I am not driving this baby properly. Trying to accelerate slowly like the Golf and keeping the revs just above 1k is getting me much better mpg now!!

I use Bradford Auid for servicing as well and they're generally helpful and knowledgeable.

I have recently upgraded to the B8 model (audi a4 2.0 tdi), i have same problem... my average mpg never exceeds 33mpg
Get your car back to the dealer pronto, you should do far better than that.
I have the 170PS TDi with the manual gearbox, its a year old and has covered 18k miles, I regularly get more than 50mpg and in a recent 100 mile trundle in rush hour traffic managed to average 60.1mpg. I was so impressed I even took a photo of the display in the car. Even when I'm pushing on a bit I can manage mpg well into the forties eg Gatwick Airport to Ayr (SW Scotland), 450 miles covered in 6 hours including 2 short stops - 47 mpg. Love my A4.

Comparissons being made between an auto and manual MPG is not really comparring apples for apples.
If I owned a manual and was not getting higher mileage per my gallon of the smelly stuff over an auto, I would be a tad naffed off.
The manual 143 and pricier 170 are both very frugal cars when driven over an average cycle and even more so when you have a sensible 'lets see what I can get' head on.
Its a personal thing when it comes down to auto or manual and what we want from our drive.
For me after many years of manual cars I decided to try the auto route and I do not think I would pick manual over auto when buying a car of the A4 ilk again.
Likewise when buying the wifes Edition 30 Golf GTI, I did not and would not when replacing in a year or so for a Mk6 would I consider anything other than manual.
Anyway back the point...........In my experience I have found the Multitronic box a complete dream. With Hill Hold in nose to tail traffic it is just so easy and relaxing and when wanting to have a bit of a drive, in 'M' with 8 forward ratio's to play with to flick up and down its a whizz. Manual with out the left leg work.
Also, given you are always in the correct ratio for optimum performance and the speed of the gear shifts, I would put money on that in real driving terms it is quicker than a 143M and even on par with a 170M.
MPG........Upper 40's with mixed driving is easily do-able, on a run 50+ is not unusual and even 60+ on the rare ocassion.
Having said this the box does need to be learnt and it does take a few hundred miles to learn to drive it at its best and in addition to this, if you do get spirited with it you will see mid 30's quite easy.
If any one is expecting to ground breaking MPG out of this box, don't buy it go manual. But if you can live with lower MPG over the benifits the box offers, DO IT, you will not be dissapointed.
If anyone is only managing 30 something form a Multi with normal driving, get it in, its not working right.

Have you checked the tyre pressures? I had new fronts on mine and they'd put in slight too much air and I lost 8mpg overnight.

Tim[/QUOTE]
Thats surprising I would have thought having low pressures would be the cause of low mpg. All high pressure should do is make the car skittish and wear the tyres in the middle.

23-12-2010, 06:00 PM
I would have thought if the pressures were higher you would get less rolling resistance hence better MPG, Low pressure would make it worse? Or am I missing something here? I alway run my tyres a couple PSI higher for better MPG?

And Finally after 18 months, the issue(s) appear to have been resolved - New Flywheel (rattle/vibration), ECU Update, Wheel Alignment, and new Exhaust Clamp to replace broken one (can't believe it took 6 visits/bookings for them to finally notice). After getting approx 300 miles from a full tank - NOW fingers crossed I have done 260 miles approx on only HALF!!!!! going to see how things go and hopefully I don't have a dodgy needle!!
Hope this helps anyone else who has had similar symptoms to myself!!!

Chucky,
I have identical problem, on a 2006 multi 2.0 on 68k, best I can get is 32mpg, and that is a 70 percent motorway commute that totals 32 miles. The air filter box as you said was full of leaves and rubbish, the filter was as black as coal...cleaned it out and replaced filter for a slight improvement, yet to finish this current tank of fuel....I may squeeze 34/35 out of it.
Driving it like a vicar to see what it can do, and discovered to my horror how low it is, just come from a 320 m sport coupe, went like a rocket and did 40 mpg.
It is going to dealer for 4 days next week, as out of country, still in a warranty, and want to point them in the right direction.....fuel filter was done at 40k, was yours very clogged, was that the problem.
What was the ecu update ?
Grateful for your advice
Cheers

I've a 170 TDI sline FWD, I just drive normally, keeping to the speed limits, but using the power on occasion.
Overall average 56.4mpg
On a run, c100 miles 61-64mpg
85k on the clock, no issues, running like a dream and I'm very happy :)
Tip.. Keep the engine as close to 2k RPM as possible, thats the sweet spot for economy, I find anyway!

After getting approx 300 miles from a full tank - NOW fingers crossed I have done 260 miles approx on only HALF!!!!! going to see how things go and hopefully I don't have a dodgy needle!!
Hope this helps anyone else who has had similar symptoms to myself!!!

Hi there Chucky,
Regards our a4 avant s-line multi 2.0tdi 143 2010, I have the same problem, so have now checked tyre pressures and are all at 36psi, I have checked the air filter and discovered full of leaves, debris and filter is clogged. Bearing in mind the car was only serviced only 600 miles I thought it time to visit the dealer again on low mpg (the 2 calcs on 2 tanks show 35mpg and 34mpg) and tackle them on the air filter.
As it turns out the air filter is changed at 60,000 miles!! Anyway now have a new one to change in a minute.
I have raised the poor mpg, there have done a fault memory check and they are someone stuck on what to do next as there is no problem to address.
I then went to discuss the ecu upgrade you have had, whilst they dont deny it they are dependant on what the system says about software upgrades, and there is nothing to do on our car. However they are to help me and are willing to help, they have asked me to ask you if there were any new components fitted prior to the ecu upgrade, furthermore they require an API or SVM reference to proceed.
I was wondering if you were able to give me your car details or date your car was sorted, then perhaps I can call your dealer and ask what they did.
I feel as though you are my main hope to get the matter sorted, so I hope you read this and can get in touch.
Cheers and hopefully hear from you soon.

[QUOTE Have you checked the tyre pressures? I had new fronts on mine and they'd put in slight too much air and I lost 8mpg overnight.
Anyone else?

How can too much tyre pressure cause poor MPG I thought it would be the other way around ??

I thought the same thing. I have an s-line with 245 tyres and constantly checking to make sure the pressures are at the 29psi that was recommended to me. When I last had the tyres changed they were slightly more worn in the middle and I generally had them at 31-32 psi so hopefully lowering it will counter that. Have no idea how much difference 2 psi will make to the tyre life but that's why I'm keeping an eye on things. Would let you know how it's going but only done a couple of thousand miles on the new ones so don't yet know!
Apologies for going slightly off topic there but was going to say, on those pressures, that I got and indeed am getting around 55mpg on motorway journeys of around 100 miles driving at 65mph and am happy if I hit 37mpg when driving around town. I haven't noticed a big difference in mpg due to the change in pressure. I find things like weather conditions affect the mileage, get less in bad weather, (anyone else?) and obviously if I'm running a little late!
That's a very gentle driving style btw

Does anyone have a 2010 2.0tdi multi avant 143?
And can you comfirm the mpg on say a long journey on DIS 1 and then the overall average on DIS 2.
Cheers

I have a 2010 A4 Avant TDi Multi And having similar issues. I've had it since June 2012 and seem to be getting 34mpg on a tank. Today I did a 140mile round trip and on managed just on 42mph and that was at constant 75mph. Car runs beautifully otherwise.
I need to check tyre pressures etc as I see you guys mention that makes a huge difference.
I'm wondering if I too should be taking it in to Audi? I had a petrol Golf mk4 1.8Turbo before and got 42mph on motorway so surely should be getting a lot more out of this one?
I see someone mentioned use cruise whenever possible? I've tried with and without and driven in manual and still the same. Other threads on this forum state that cruise control kills mpg??
Thanks in advanced for any advice.

Hi,
I have bought a 2009 Audi A4 2.0 TDI (140hp) with multitronic three weeks ago and I am getting 27,42 MPG (Imperial) in street driving, and I honestly believe that is way too much...
I have a very light foot and drive quite calmly with no pushing of any sort...
Does anyone know if dealer can/must update ECU in order to sort this problem out?
