Hi I have a 2005 A4 2.0Tdi advant and it started ok twice this morning but pulling into a car park the car stalled and the red brake fluid light came on in the dash and it was telling me to stop the car and check the brake fluid level.
Level is ok and when I went to start the car the engine isn't even turning. All i'm getting is a click, the starter isn't trying.
The first thing I tried was to jump start it as there was a slope in the car park. NO joy:mad:
Next I got on to my wife to bring down the laytop so that I could scan the car and see if there was anything coming up in that.

The results are below:

So as you can see there is nothing coming up with the ABS in the scan but when i try to start the car the red ABS warning light is coming up in the dash telling me to check the level.
The other thing is this warning light doesn't come on all the time.

So I'm hoping there is someone out there that what be able to help, I've a basic VCDS working knowledge of the software so if there is something I can do that I haven't done and you can tell me I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Battery voltage? Starter? Ignition Switch? Just a click sounds like a starter or battery to me. The click is the power solenoid switching the cranking amps into the starter. If the starter isn't turning, then usually this would be a bad battery/starter or lead/ground.

The red ABS lamp may be unrelated.

Just to let anyone who is watching this post.

The problem started Tues morning so I had the car to the local audi workshop by midday on Wed cause after having a look at it myself tues I knew that the crankshaft was locked up.
They started off thinking that it first could be the flywheel/clutch... It wasn't
Then they checked the timing belt and the valves on the head.... Wasn't these either:confused:
So I'm just off the phone with them and it turns out that the cause of the sudden stop was the chain that drives the oil pump from the crankshaft broke and wrapped itself around the crankshaft locking it up causing the car to stop.

This is were the fun starts.

Audi don't do the chains anymore for the oil pump so the workshop are saying that I'll have to get a new oil pump with a gear on it along with 2 new gears that will allow it to connect to the crankshaft and also buy a new sump that will allow for the new gear set up to fit into AND they want me to pay for it as they wont cover it as the car is 5 years old.
Also obviously i'll have to pay for a new head gasket etc for the other bits + pieces to go back on to.....

Thats the story so far so I'll ley ye know how it goes on Monday

It's a known VAG 2.0 tdi engine problem. The oil pump balancer shaft assembly was upgraded to gears from a chain drive. I would ask the Audi dealer why yours wasn't recalled and fixed under warranty earlier in its life. Search the forum for balancershaft/oil pump. You will find loads of comments especially in passat b6 section.

I was just looking at all the posts relating to the oil pump problems.
The thing I can't understand why the car wasn't recalled either as I ahve had the car there a few times and twice they told me about recalls but nothing about this... Until now

I will be pushing for them to sort it out now though.... fun times ahead
