Its a real shame when people do things like that - discourages others from wanting to help.

I've only been a member here a very short time, but have to say that I have been made to feel most welcome, and have been given some really good advice already.

agreed, ive not been on here that long, everyone is very friendly and helpful, its not rocket science how to use a forum and if they can choose a user name then they should be able to work out where to post for help

its terrible. whats worse is when someone comes along, asks a question, you give them an answer, then never hear from them again. just plain ignorant IMHO. why cant they just reply to say thanks ???
some forums really give newcomers a hard time for posting in the wrong section, but on here we seem to be a bit more forgiving.

we welcome anyone, with any query, big or small, regardless of their background or their attitude to begin with.

But yes, we do seem to attract some ar$eholes.

I'm allowed to say this as it's not in public view.

That does not, however, mean that ar$ehole status is exclusive to new members, mentioning no names.

technically, i suppose it could be made to read anything. How about..

"click here to thank this person for their helpful post"

granted, it would be a long button, but there looks like the space is available and it will get noticed more.

I've noticed a few members that have begun politely posting advice along the lines of "Try posting in the correct section for your vehicle and you may get some help". Some of these members have contributed to this thread and some have not.

Either way, may I thank you all for your politeness and patience with these new members and those that post in the except VAG section.

could the 'except vag section' have some sort of filter, like the swear filter, that wont allow any words that could be assosciated with vag, like audi, volkswagen , A3, etc... that would confuse people.:D

I like this thread lots becasue its true that we attract quick fix Freddy and I can spot workshop questions on here too.

Some one in the trade asked me recently why I help out forums and I said because for every 10 ********* there is one genuine member who needs advise.

I believe if you are kind to others they in turn will be kind back and that's really what its all about

Cheers for changing the rep button.

I still think we ought to have a general VW button. That way newbs can post there and we can move it if we need to, but also there are plenty of VAG topics which cover more than one car model...

Thoughts?

Would it not be better if the REP button had THANKS on it. I don't care if someone only comes on once to get an answer to their problem. We all get problems and it is nice to find a place where someone is willing to help. This is a great forum.

It's been a problem since I've been on the site but something made me stick with it and carry on helping.

Almost 5 years later <wince> and it's still going on, I think that's just the nature of forums (and life?) though.

The majority of people are only out for themselves.

I don't remember you behaving like an idiot. You may have asked some simple questions, which are obvious to someone with more experience, but you either put them in the right place, or said thanks to Esh for moving them, and when you were given an answer, you added a post to say thanks.

I don't think you ever posted 3 threads in different places with similar titles, added a post 2 hours later asking why no one was answering, and then disappearing as soon as you got the advice you needed.

That's why we like you.

Agree with you 100% :beerchug: But we also need a ******** button!!!

There already is... of sorts. The red flag button in the top right corner can be used to report a post to the moderators if it's warranted ("Processed Meat In A Tin", for example), which I'd imagine will then result in Mycarsavw's BAN button being used by a moderator.

I'm not suggesting we should all start using this for numpty posts, though, as the mods would get inundated by messages about reported posts, and would then probably ban me for suggesting this in the first place! :D

I have to admit, I am occasionally saddened that so many people seem to come onto the site demanding help, then disappear without even a simple Thanks once they have been given the answer. The only upside is that the folks who don't fall into this category are absolutely the best bunch of nutters anywhere! :beerchug:

The number of members who have put your name down as someone who told them to join.

Sadly there's no way for us normal members to see who these referrers are - only Stu can see those details :(

This sounds really crass, but I'll only ever help out members I know properly/for a long time now.

I got sick of being chastised or having the **** taken out of me, whilst trying to help someone out.

I think what finished it off for me last time was a gent with a TT who wanted me to 'adjust' his mileage, but then got smeggy when I told him I refused to.
