Out of the blue, on Wednesday, a buzzing/high-pitched rattle started from somewhere behind the instruments display. Rough roads started it, an it continues on all but the smoothest road surfaces. It also appears when you accelerate through the rev. range at about 3000rpm.
I have tried banging and prodding the instrument cluster and even taken of my favourite panel at the end of the dashboard - the one you can see when you open the driver's door and beneath which is one of the fuse panels. However nothing appears to be loose there.

Tonight, I went out and it was still there but when I turned on the heater to maximum, I'm sure the noise ceased and so am wondering whether it is heater-ducting related?
I am very loath the have the dealers strip out the dashboard to investigate but maybe it will have to come to that or be driven to distraction - not a good idea.
    Quality cars! Pah!

It is likely to be heater-duct related, there is a workshop campaign about it, Workshop no: 80B4, owners not notified.

Can you elaborate a bit? And your reference does not show anything.

There is known recall campaign coded 80B4, that one of the components of the heater-ducting may become loose. Remedial action carried out by delaers is securing the duct with a plastic stripe. Please refer to linked document, workshop memo to delaers (in German).

maxlibertas do you have the photograph.
It seems you just need to attach a tywrap around the heater duct pipe where it comes off the heater box behind the centre of the dash board to secure it and prevent it coming off.

HHGTTG you should be able to check if this is your problem by looking up under the dash towards the centre look for the large black tube that goes to the footwell duct, check both ends are attached.
As this is written for LHD cars it may be the passengers side or drivers side that is affected on UK cars can't tell without photo if the hoses are different or not.

Hard to tell from photos if it is for LHD or RHD.
Anyhow, as per the 80B4 campaign, Vw dealers should check and fit where necessary.

HHTTG. is your car still ticking after being parked in the sun? Mine is, very annoying. It comes from the shiny black trim panel on the outside of the B pillar. You can hear it clearly from outside the car.

Is anyone else suffering from this? If so, any fixes?

Yes, I heard it today but that noise pales into insignificance now, as a most annoying buzzing/rattling noise has developed inside the fascia somewhere and I long to be worried again by the doors or whatever 'ticking'. This new noisse sounds like something loose or scraping and is infuriating and I think is something to do with the ventilation ducting especially when chilled by the aircon.
However I heard some ticking this afternoon when the sun appeared and a seemed to play on the interior door trim (through the glass) but who really knows? Others have said that it could be those shiny exterior vertical door trims. And so it goes on.
Naively, I thought I had left this all behind when I changed from my MK5 to the MK6. As the French say. Plus ca change...............
