    UPDATE

Replace the hazard relay about a month back (09-06-2008) with part from VW specialist

Failed again this morning both left & right turn and also hazards have stopped working

Located 10 & 15 amp fuses and replaced both

Tried right turn and it worked

Tried left turn and blew a 10 amp fuse

Tried hazards and blew 15 amp fuse

Any ideas on what could be causing the failures?

Sounds like a short circuit (probably bad wiring) some place. The usual suspects would be movable connections in the ignition switch, the stalk switch.

I'd have the ignition switch checked first (especially if your headlights act funny and your windscreen wipers die on you) if the fuses blow while the engine is running (or ignition is on).
If the fuses blow when the key is out, and you test your hazards, have your wiring checked.

OK, it's been in today from 9 till 4 but unable to trace the fault. Hasn't blown a fuse for them in the garage, engine running and shut down, out on a test run.

I thing I have noticed is that the indicator lights now don't flash when the car is locked/unlocked using the remote key fob. They were working before it started to blow fuses.

Could the issues be connected or is the lock/unlock flashing on another fuse

It could be a fault with the central convieniance unit/wiring under the passenger side front carpet, they are very prone to water damage.

My Passat usually exhibited curious behaviour whenever the wiring went bad. The last time I had untracable gremlins when my rear doors wouldn't lock or open remotely, I found out it was worn wiring in the real left door between the door and the pilar/column.

Then before that it was theindicators going on strike when the engine was running, and the climatronic displayig some Marsian symbols, turned out to be a bad ignition switch.

I still put my money on bad wiring in your case, though.

Were the doors open when they were checking it at the workshop and came out empty? Maybe there could be something there.

Also try inspecting the wiring at all the obvious places you would expect wear from use or weather (like the connectors in the dome, badly seated or rated fuses, unfaithfull relays, moiusture in the indicator housing, etc).

    My 1 cent.

Hi, Do you have a tow bar and the electrics installed, I just had a similar problem, and found the tow bar relay had blown, this caused my indicator lights to play up and blow the fuse.

No tow bar fitted to mine.

Indicators work fine now, but, I'm still without indicators when I lock/unlock the car with the remote
