    Can you test the loom with a multometre to see how many cores are damaged? I'd be aiming to splice new lenghts into existing loom to avoid too much disassembly.

    There isnt a problem with the loom, I removed it from the front section of the frame for easier access. My biggest problem at the moment is working out how to replace the cables. I can't see how the mechanism can be removed without dismantling the back end of the frame. I've searched the net high and low for repair manuals but nothing on any VAG

    Ah, I see. I thought you meant electrical cable - it's the steel wire ones that are playing up?

    VAG repair guide indeed says "Remove assembly from vehicle; remove motor; remove rear part";

    Ok . . Quick update.
    The frame is all reassembled. New cables in for the pano glass. The blind was an absolute pain trying to put back together. Hope it works ok as had no issue with that before. The frame is all bonded back together and sealed. Also the resin repair seems to be holding well. Just need to replace the aperture seal but VW have changed the design so it deflects the water rather than sealing the frame to the roof.

    I am just repairing a new Beetle cab rood header rail locking mechanism. There is (was) a repair kit which is slightly modified but nothing in the manual that explains how to assemble it...gits!

    Crappy update

    Decided not to replace the outer seal, thought it would be a good idea to clean up the old seal and try it as the new seal is nothing alike.

    On the plus side, the roof now works and is not leaking past the original seal . . . So that's good. However, it's leaking through the frame where I have bonded the back end back on and the blind has decided to give up!

    Really, really, really fed up of this now!

    The plan now, is to remove the glass panels, remove the blind. Try and seal the new leak and rebuild. If the blind doesn't go back together, I think I'll leave it out and have the glass tinted

    I don’t know what it is about anything to do with a roof that is anything other than a piece of tin but they give nothing but trouble and can be soul destroying to fix, they are aesthetically and user desirable but maintenance wise are a nightmare.
