Mrs Midge's mk4 1.6 auto 8V has an intermittent problem. On start from cold, it will sometimes run rough for the first 30 seconds or so OR if you stick it back in neutral and rev it, the rough running will clear pretty much immediately. No other running problems and no fault code logged.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Sounds like a fault with the secondary air injection but it depends on year and engine code as there are variations.

Hi Crasher - it's a 2003 with engine code BFQ. Wouldn't secondary air injection just affect the emissions?

Yes that has Secondary Air Injection and the so called "Combi Valve" 06A 131 351 F can cause this problem, it is on the same bracket as the EGR valve on the side of the head over the gearbox with a thick plastic hose going to it from the air pump.

Found it - thanks. Take it there isn't an easy way of testing it/fixing it and it's just a case of swapping and hoping?

It can be tested but it is less trouble to change it and see what happens. My Octavia did this for years and I put up with it as fixing my own car is too much after spending all day fixing other people’s but it cured that initial minute of lumpy running.

OK - I'll give it a go and post up the results. Thanks again.

Evening Crasher. Got a new valve a while back and finally fitted it about a fortnight ago. When I was removing one of the hoses from the old one, I felt that one clip on one side wasn't fully on - and I moved it a fraction so it clipped on fully. The movement was so slight I didn't feel it was enough for a significant air leak past the O ring - so I decided I'd swap the valve anyway. Touch wood, no rough running since - so it looks like it was one or the other, or perhaps even a combination. So thanks very much for the pointer - greatly appreciated.
