EDIT: Since this directory was created, we have introduced the ICE section. This has been moved from the "How To" section to here for ease of reference.

Many times the same question is asked so i thought i'd collate all the threads i know of in to one handy place for ease of reference. In no particular order.

The questions in these links maybe asked about a particular car but all the problems and answers tend to be universal.

EDIT ON 28/06/2007 - Just called it to VW TAMWORTH on my way home and enquired in to VW car audio and MP3 compatibility. AS OF NOW assuming 07 plate cars, all RCD300 and RCD500 are able to read MP3 discs. This feature can be identified by the text mp3 in white italic printed below centre of the CD slot. Should you be thinking of upgrading your radio, the cost of a brand new RCD500 mp3 is £649.75 ish.

EDIT ON 15/06/2009 - Newer radios are available from Vw now, the rcd310, rcd510 with and without HDD. They can all be retro fitted but you may require a firmware upgrade to combat battery drainage. See this thread. https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...ad.php?t=69325

My Touran was delivered at the start of July, and has an RCD500. Unforunately its not marked "mp3" on the front, and won't accept a cd-rom which I am sure is in the right format (e.g. no funny file names, less than 64 characters in the folder and file names).

I burnt a cd with some mp3 files in the root folder, and it plays them. but there is no 'mp3 menu' type behaviour i could see (e.g. reading the id3 tags from the files to display the title).

The one I saw was in the display cabinet in the VW showroom. If yours plays mp3's then i'd be happy with that. I myself have not seen one to experiment with.

ooops, it doesn't work after all. My CD burning software created a music CD from the MP3 files. And of course, the audio CD plays fine.

Apologies for the confusion. The RCD500 doesn't play MP3 unless its the right version. Believe me, I'm gutted.

Hi Folks - does anyone have a pinout/connection diagram for a Gamma V unit? I've installed one in my 97 Polo, but every time I remove the ignition key, I have to reset the code when I switch on the radio again. The car has the standard ISO connectors, but obviously something is missing......

it sounds like the it is only being powered by the ignition feed - i.e. only when the ignition is on. try looking towards the wiring, i'd guess, and it is only a guess that the live or battery feed is in the wrong place.

Just a quick note to say that I recently swapped my rcd 300 for a rcd 300 mp3 version following instructions posted in this thread. Works a treat, only took about 15mins- the hardest part of all was finding the right screwdrivers. Good to join the modern world & be able to play mp3 cds at long last...

Bought it off ebay- buy it now price was £195- I went through the auction process though. Eventually got it for just over £130- good price when you consider VW charge nearly £600 for a brand new bog standard rcd 300. Selling my 'old' rcd 300 unit as we speak (it had only be replaced in July under warranty) so at least I'll get some of that money back...

Had though about other options- e.g. aftermarket unit, but in the end keeping the oem look can't be beaten for that blue glow on a night time...

Following your example from your previous post, i'm now also bidding on a head unit. i couldn't really decide between the rcd 300 mp3 or the standard rcd 500 and fit an ipod lead, also on ebay. i know its probably cost more but its just the job i think.
