    Hi there,

    Car is Audi A6 - 2.0 SE TDI - 2005 model

Was wondering if anybody is familiar with faulty electronic parking brakes. Had a warning light come on today and it wouldn't apply correctly - then light went off and it functioned correctly. Just gone out to drive and the damn light came back on and it refuses to disengage the brake, so i'm effectively stuck.....

Would welcome any advice on this most readily.

    Thx.

Had the same problem with mine a couple of years ago, turned out to be a frayed/damaged/severed cable to one of the wheels which froze the handbrake on. There are two options for a fix, RAC came out and spliced cable with connectors to get me going again or you'll need to get the whole cable replaced. If memory serves this was a known problem for early C6 cars with later cars having a more robust cable fitted.

Thx for reply ceegee - I managed to get the brake disengaged by luck over judgement: constant messing with the switch and throttle seemed to dupe it into a false sense of security....

I've taped over the switch so i can't inadvertantly apply the brake without warning and obviously leave it in gear when parking it - although i have found that there is a lot of learned behaviour with regards to pressing the clutch pedal b4 ignition.... nearly rolled into parked stuff on 2 occasions. Car is going to be diagnostically evaluated at Tonbridge Audi on Tuesday and i will post the results hereafter in an attempt to broaden the knowledge of faulty parking brakes.

An hour's diagnostic served only to show that faults were found with F234 switch and J540 Control unit.

The guys said that i'd need to rebook it in for 1-2 hrs so they can get at what they need to thro the boot.

Now if this is just a loose wire or faulty switch - i can see the hrly diagnosis charges - which are @ £140 an hr - + the switch coming to god-knows how much - just for a dumb electronic malfunction...

Just wondered if anyone could advise a different method of resolution with potentially less damaging financial implications...

    Thx

Just to add that i had the same problem last year, parking brake would not disengage. Ended up being a damaged cable, mechanic ordered the part from audi and spliced it in. All in it cost me about 150 quid.

I had the same problem. Did you know that if it's stuck on, put your seatbelt on and put the car in 1st gear, then slowly pull away and it will automatically disengage the brake. RAC guy told me this over the phone when he was on his way to see me. Works fine which means I don't have a reliable handbrake but atleast I won't get stuck!

hi, i have had the same problem with the driver side rear parking cable damaged, it looks like the cable was replaced and spliced in by the last owner, it has been removed by rac from the connector by the wheel and i have been using the epb and its working only on the passenger side. i am hoping someone can tell me what the part no or what the part is called and if i can order it from an online retailer rather than audi, i have someone that could fit it for me.
    thank you

Same thing has happened to me - I have been driving around with it taped up for the last few months and have got quite used to driving without a handbrake. However, i have it booked in to an Audi specialist in Basingstoke on Monday for them to put a diagnostic on it.....

    Hi,

One thought, if it is a damaged cable, can youget underneath and take a look at both and try to confirm? It you see damage, either repair yourself as best you can, get new cable fitted, or get an auto electrician to make good.

If it's not the cable, then I guess you have to leave it to Audi or a specialist.

Can anyone with experience of this issue recall where the damage occurs to make finding it easier?

Also found this TSB which may not be relevant if the cable is damaged !!
