    Hi everyone,

I hope you're all doing well.

Firstly, apologies for the lengthy story.

Due to health issues, I wasn't able to work on my wife's car, an Audi A6 C6 2.0 Tdi Le Mans edition. I sent it to the garage for its annual test and asked for a small service, along with fixing some issues with the rear brakes. I was expecting a hefty bill for two new calipers, but thankfully, they managed to fix it without needing replacements.
When I picked up the car, they advised me to consider replacing the auxiliary belt and cambelt. I agreed, and we booked it in. However, just two days later, the car wouldn't start. The garage claimed they couldn't help, which was frustrating. After a few days, I managed to get a different mechanic out, who discovered that the auxiliary belt was partially shredded and had likely tangled with the cambelt, causing it to skip some teeth. He managed to start the engine, albeit louder than before. Initially, the mechanic said he would take it back to his garage, reset the timing, and replace the belts. However, there's no guarantee the engine will survive as we can't be sure of the extent of the damage. After weeks of empty promises and numerous phone calls to different garages, it seems like no one wants to help.
Somehow, I understand. It's possibly game over for the engine.
So, here I am. I know most of you will say that since I'm here asking questions, I shouldn't be attempting to do the job myself. And yes, I understand that I shouldn't. I've never changed a cambelt in my life, let alone tried to reset the timing. But still, I feel like I'm alone with this and would rather risk blowing up the engine than scrapping it as it is.

    So, here's my issues.
I'm looking at the camshaft, high-pressure fuel pump, and the crankshaft. Obviously, I can't get the marks to match. The crankshaft has to be two teeth forward from the mark for the camshaft mark to match. Can I set the crankshaft at the mark, try to release the tension, and remove the belt partially to allow me to move the camshaft forward without removing the head? Then, put the belt back on and rotate it a few times by hand? Am I wrong in assuming that since I can turn the engine by hand now, there is still hope?

    Thank you
    Mack

The car has a CAHA engine which is from the EA189 series, dependable but the centre of the VW emissions fiasco. Replacing the cambelt isn’t difficult but it is a lot work and does mean pulling the front of the car forward into its “service position” and you do need specific cam and sprocket locking tools.

Thanks for the info about the engine.
All the steps you described I have already completed. Auxiliary belt, or what was left of it removed and cambelt exposed.
My original question was, if I can loosen the belt and move the camshaft only as it does not match the crankshaft and fuel pump timing marks.
This is beyond my capabilities as I don't want to remove the head on my driveway. Searching for a specialist who can hopefully rebuild it.
    But thanks for your reply

You must use the proper locking tools, that way you know it is correct. It is worth me pointing out you must not resurface the head of these engines, if the surface is not flat then the head must be replaced. We have one to do on this engine in an A4 and we will use a brand new AMC head that comes built up with valves.
