Even if it had been a genuine pump it would not have been covered under warranty as it is 2 years. It would be interesting to know the make of the pump though, just out of curiosity.

I've decided to sell the car for spares or repair, don't have the time to mess around so looks like the wife will be getting a new car after all

That's a real PITA, shouldn't be happening that a 9 year old car is BER due to a water pump failure. You're probably making the right call though, repair costs will be ££££

Almost every car is now a scraper if it suffers a catastrophic failure at about 10 years old, the repair costs are so high that the numbers don't make sense. We better get used to it though, when a Passat GTE is nine years old its battery warranty will have long expired and a new battery is £6865.52 plus installation and coding so it simply isn't going to happen which is really environmentally friendly isn't it? A recent study concluded that to pay back it's manufacturing CO2, a typical hybrid needs to last 17 years WITHOUT a battery change and that is not going to happen.

We were pushed down this path with Diesel and look at the disaster that has been, literally millions of premature deaths worldwide. No were are being coaxed into electric self driving cars, from what I have read Uber are starting to wag a finger at the monitor driver in the crash that killed a pedestrian/cyclist. I also read that autonomous cars will require us to hold the wheel and be poised on the pedals, so what is the point?

I can see we are heading for an environmental nightmare in about twenty years time when the authorities realise they have a huge pile of highly unstable volatile Lithium Ion batteries that get very angry if they get wet, imagine the fly tipping scenarios in years to come...

Not the current 'authorities' problem at the moment though, the current mob, by then, will be happily retired to their country piles. They pay lip service to the problem, convince the majority electric / hybrid is the future and kick the can further down the road, knowing Johnny taxpayer can pick up the bill .

Car sold for a 1/3 of it's value. The cambelt and pump were changed in Feb 2015. Putting it down to bad luck and move on!
