I changed the front pads on the car this morning and noticed that the O/S/F CV gaiter is split

Being a bit 'up against it' financially I want to try and change this myself if at all possible. I've searched the forum and there seems to be a way of removing the driveshaft without having to disassemble any of the suspension components, by undoing the driveshaft connectors to the gearbox then the hub connector?

Can anyone tell me if this is possible and or advisable?

    Thanks.

Failing any advice on doing this job myself, can anyone give me a ballpark cost to get this replaced by an independent specialist?

Is this the Outer CV boot?
I Cannot comment on the possibility without removing any suspension but i did the outer on my Allroad, With the hub bolt loose, then By removing the top pinch bolt which then gives enough for the CV joint to come out the hub assy.

Top pinch bolt can be the sticking point to whether an easy job or a nightmare!!

I paid £18 for all parts direct from Audi, (new CV Gaitor, New Hub Bolt, Clips & Grease)

    regards

    Andy

    Andy,

That pinch bolt looks like the make or break for the job, that's why I was interested to hear whether you can get away with not having to undo it.

    Thanks.

    (Yes it's the outer boot)

I've heard some opinions that the A6 driveshaft can be removed without undoing the pinch bolt (remove brake calliper and disk, then turn steering to full lock to get out), and other say this isn't possible. I'm going to try it when I need to do my CV joints.

As for getting an independant to do it, I'd guess at about £150-200 each side, but that's a guess. Give a couple a call and ask them.

    Thanks Nick,

I think that a saving of £150-200 is worth a punt at trying to get the driveshaft off without undoing the pinch bolt etc. It looks like you might only have to loosen the hub bolt, remove the wheel, caliper and disc and put on full lock. If this does not work and the pinch bolt won't move I'll put it all back together and ask an independent to do it.

My a6 failed mot today split cv boot.
Earlier today- I thought I'd give it a good clean - and noticed nearside alloy wheel was greasy and heavily stained . Wasnt like that last week-- so split boot makes sense .
I cant be ar$ed doing it and asked mot garage (reputable one) for a price to do it .
    £65 inclusive of vat .
    So, Booked it in-

I chickened out in the end, just don't have the tools or the space to do the job (especially if anything went wrong) but many thanks and much kudos to Chris (Adams24) for sorting both the gaiter and a dodgy thermostat out for me....top man
