I asked them for a full flash but they denied. They told me they follow Audi's instructions and can't do anything else. I know that oil is mixed now and plan on changing it again the same way in 30.000 kms.

My gearbox is the ZF 6HP19.

Fair enough but I don't understand why they did half a job as the procedure is not to only change half the oil and if the pan is coming off as well to replace the filter they may as well do the job as Audi instruct.
You can never fully drain the oil hence flushing cleans it through but the basic setting road test can be done by the driver as the upshifts etc will be taught in by your style however to make sure the clutch's and solenoids are working as intended its best the dealer does it via there vas tester

Adaption drive sequence for 6-speed automatic gearbox 09E/09L/0AT/0B6
An adaption makes sense under the following circumstances:
I Customer complains of harsh gear-shifting.
    I ATF change.
    I Repairs to clutches.
I Replacement of mechatronics unit or gearbox.
    I After a software update.

    YZNote:
    - Resetting of the adaption values for the clutches was phased-in to the software in model year 2006. Perform a software update as necessary.
    - The number of adaptions carried out is an indicator of whether the gearbox has adapted sufficiently. If the driver's driving style is highly performance-oriented, adaption rarely takes place, as the adaption conditions are not met. An adaption helps to take account of the wear within the gear-shifting phase. For more instructions and information refer to SSP 385.

The adaption drive is carried out in four segments, on a flat stretch of road with a good surface:

In segment 1 the so-called quick adaption takes place. This adaption is possible above gear oil temperatures of 40°C, and adapts the fill pressure for the clutch B, C and E.
    Sequence:
Accelerate the vehicle from a standstill at very low torque (around 100Nm) up to 4th gear in D. Then allow the vehicle to free-wheel down to 40km/h without braking, then brake slowly down to a standstill. Wait 5 seconds at standstill. The action is a maximum of repeated 3 times.

From segment 2 of the adaption drive onwards, a pulse adaption is carried out on an unused clutch. A gear oil temperature of at least 55°C is required. The following procedure adapts clutches B and C:
Drive a 3-4km stretch at a torque of around 100Nm in Tiptronic 5th gear (manual) in the engine speed range 1600-2800 rpm. Then accelerate the vehicle and continue driving in Tiptronic 6th gear (manual) at 1600-2800 rpm for a further 3-4km.

In segment 3 clutches A and C are adapted according to the following procedure:
Drive the vehicle in Tiptronic 5th gear (manual) between 1400 and 2100 rpm for one minute (pulling) and then allow the engine speed to fall to 1400 rpm (overrun). Run the entire procedure until clutches A and C have been adapted once, though no more than three times in total.

In segment 4 clutches D and E are adapted (if they have not already been adapted in the course of the other segments) as follows:
Keep the vehicle in Tiptronic 3rd gear (manual) at 60Nm torque in an engine speed range between 1400 and 2100 rpm for one minute, then slowly brake down to a standstill and remain stopped for 5 seconds. Run the entire procedure until clutches D and E have been adapted once, though no more than three times in total.

    End of adaption drive:
    - Run a test drive through all gears, assessing the gear-shift jerk at standstill and during driving. If no improvement has occurred, adapt specific individual clutches.

Exactly this, they told me that can never drain the fluid fully as it remains in the block of the gearbox. The oil that was drained was about 5 liters I was in front of the whole procedure. They re-checked and programmed everything with Audi's computer and working great so far. Car has 148.000 kms now.

    Hi A8 and all viewers,

I'm happy that you confirm the dealer is giving me correct info. So many times I seem to read that dealers are slipping up, so you have re-affirmed my faith in them. In your opinion is it a worth while investment or is it a "belt & braces" job and should not really need to do it. As I mentioned at the start of this thread, my dealer and others state that the box is "sealed for life". Having said all that, the car has done 200,000km and although (touch wood) it's running superb, I would like to keep it that way.

    Thanks again A8

Audi made the call on the service regime but zf advise the oil change and I would go for the full job as the basic setting will make the box more responsive

This gearbox also uses the fuzzy logic function, this learns the drivers style of driving and adapts the gear change to suit so by deleting the learnt values and re apply factory basic settings it resets and and adjust the box

I will post the information in min

What made me have it changed after all was that ZF recommends to have it changed every 120.000km or 80.000km if driven hardly.

I wish I had known all this when someone accidently drained the fluid when he was only supposed to be draining the bloody engine oil.We had no idea what to do until Martin our friendly local Audi partsman wouldnt sell us some more fluid and checked in the workshop and said it had to be recovered there for them to refill.AA recovered free so when research said that a change was advised and the car does drive better it turned out alright. The only query was that the Audi bill had to show it as a Multitronic cos they had nothing in their system for this on a Tiptronic.I dont think I would have been so happy if someone had said it was going to cost a lot lot more than my£159
