    is there a simple way of resetting the engine warning light or do i need a machine?

    Dis-connect the battery earth terminal for half an hour and that should be it,if it comes on again the problem is not resolved.You will need to do a throttle body adaption afterwards if it's a b5 you will need vag-com , on a b5.5 only requires switching on the ignition for three minutes before starting.Your car will then run on the stock ECU parameters and will feel different at first but once you drive it will re- learn all the settings it had lost and return to normal.
