My Audi A4 2.5 tdi 1998 MY broke down last week (was low on fuel)

The RAC had the engine run on easy start (so cam belt OK)
    Topped up diesel
And there was fuel coming out of the injectors, but it would not start on Diesel only?

The Garage said the Fuel Injector Pump is showing as a fault but they dont have the full Audi diagnostics?
They mention and ECU being part of the pump and that it wil be an expensive job.

Any advise on what to do next?

Its an Electronic Pump yes, but the ECU is seperate.A fault code read is your best bet before chucking money at it.

    Thanks Alan,

I have been told its the EDC part of the pump.

Found www.dieselpumprepairs.com who claim to be able to repair the EDC? has anyone used there services?

Does anyone know of the cheapest option of getting a second hand pump?

Hi,how sure is the garage of the pump being at fault? Other issues can put a Pump Fault on,but because its the effect of a fault, not the cause of it.

Mine went last year, 2.5tdi AFB. the AA get it running with spray, but otherwise wont run. I read the codes and it showd (01318 – control module for injection pump (J399) 37-00 faulty) which means that the circket boart that is bilt into the pump had gone. this place did mine http://www.pbasher.com/ you can ether send yours in, they fix it and send it back, about 4 days, or they can send out a recon pump next day but costs a bit more. But you should read the codes first to be poitive
    Good luck
    Lyn.

Yes it is, I had to pull the front end out into service position, take the viscus fan off, take off front plastics, lock the cams and crank with a locking kit, remove the belt from the pump to the right hand cam, take off the injector pipes and fuel lines, undo the four bolts that hold the pump, and I think that was it. and if you do all that, you might as well change the breather filter that sits in the v whilst you have good access. it sounds a lot but it is possible. when as the timing belt done?

Unplug and remove the injection pump ecu module. Open up the module and check the circuit board for dry/cracked solder joint. These pump ecus usually have a few high current, larger through-hole components which switch a SOLENOID or SPILL VALVE in the pump. This is why it won't start - the fuel supply is cut off. Thermal cycling/vibration takes its toll especially on larger, heavier components on these modules. If you are very lucky you might find that two minutes with a soldering iron reflowing dodgy looking joints will get the thing working.

You have nothing to lose by checking inside the ecu. Seal back with silicone sealant if necessary
