    Hi Everyone,

please can someon help. . .?

My wife has a 51 Reg Polo 1.0L that is now displaying
the ABS light on the dashboard.

We have owned the car from new, and it has just 15k miles on the clock.

One careful lady owner, supermarket and school runs only !

The problem is intermittent, sometimes the light is comes on and stays on, other times it comes on and goes off.

    I'm suspecting a faulty ABS sensor ???

    Am i right ?

If so, has anyone got any ideas how much it may cost to replace/fix at my local VW dealer ?

As always, your thoughts and help would be much appreciated,

    Many Thanks

    Adam

    Hi Adam

It does sound to me like a fault with the ABS sensor. What I would suggest is visiting a local garage or VW specialist (cheaper than dealer ) and let them plug it into the diagnostic machine, this will tell them which sensor, or any other component for that matter.

If it is a sensor, try your local GSF or Euro Car Parts, may be cheaper

    Thanks Stuart,

    we don't have a local VW Non-Dealer specialist. . .

My local garage which usually MOT's and oil changes the car, ran a diagnostic on my VW Passat diagnosing a faulty ECU.

They suggested it would cost up to £1000 to fix.

VW sorted the problem for £88, and diagnosed a faulty switch
    on the coolant system.

Thus, I'm reluctant to take it back to a non-VW outfit.

Any ideas how easy the job is to do myself ?

If so, any ideas how many ABS sensors the car has, and
how I can tell which one has failed ?

Sorry about all the questions, you must fell like your on VW Mastermind !

    Your help is appreciated,

    Cheers,

    Adam

Mmmm... Think they tried to "rip you off"

Most cars have 4 ABS sensors, one on each wheel, any of which will bring up an ABS fault. They are fitted in each wheel hub, usually about 20mm in diameter, held by a bolt with a single cable out.

The problem is,if you do not get it plugged into a diagnostic machine you will not know which is at fault

    Many Thanks Stuart,

I'll take the wheels off first. . and see if I can see any obvious damage to any of the ABS sensors.

Failing that I'm off to VW for a diagnostic.

    I'll keep you posted,

    Regards,

    Adam
