Lets just suppose I could afford one

Should I trade my A6 3.0 tdi in for one? Anyone know if they're any good? Is Audi planning a competitor?

They look really good, much better than the old model IMHO.
April 2009: Bought Audi A6 3.0 TDi Quattro in Stratos Blue, Saloon, Manual Box, Heated Blue Leather, Cruise, 55 plate, 33k miles.
April 2014: just run in at 80k miles, private plate, rattle from the CD player

Love these questions. I like them, if I was in the market I would look at them.

My advice is.... you guessed, go drive it and see. Unfortunately you won't get a great deal of unbiased help on a VAG site .

I guess you have been over to a BMW forum to get some ideas of potential issues and costs.

    Good luck

Putting the Quattro vs RWD debate to one side, I think the facelift A6 is nicer to look at than the new 5 Series, and of course the pre-facelift A6.

Also on the A6s, the fog lights come with an off button.

i like the new f10 more than the e60 as well. but driving on quattro is no where near to rwd of my ex-e39 bmw. also service in audi is a lot better than bmw at least in greece.

Funny, I've been looking at BMW 5 and 7's recently as well as the A8.
I quite like the look of the 5 series, but it'd have to be the 535d for me i think, found myself more and more drawn to the 7series. Friend of mine got the 730d sport in black....stunning inside and out.
You can get 2-3 year old ones with reasonable mileage and some warranty for around Ł22k+
As much as I like them and am quite tempted I just keep coming back to the A8 and quattro

The NEW BMWs´that are about to invade the fairly "market leading" Audi stomping ground are a step above the last 5 years efforts. They are elegant and sporty looking, obviously expensive but the teutonic battle is about to spark!! Look at the New 5 Series and the 3 series.

Mate had new 530dm sport estate car looked the biz and was in grey similar to daytona Audi offer. Looks wise there is not a lot in it however he has driven mine. 2009(new spec) A6 Avant S-line 3.0 Quattro.

Basically he hated BMW said, in dry fine, although way way to harsh. Said completely useless in wet hated, the auto box intensley. Loved the Quattro. Impossible to loose traction off mark. Handled with comfort good ballance only thing he did not realy like was over assistance at low speeds. He now has ML450 loveley 4.5V8 TD. Nice but centre console on it looks like they got change from 50p.

He would go for Audi over BMW - I did too, not interested in car with torque and power without 4WD. However if I did not need the load capacity, and did not do 25K, a year the A8 is a dream to drive had one for 6 weeks while I was awaiting my A6. Was only a 3.2 petrol. The V8 must be fantastic as the 3.2 was quick but lacking in traction under heavy acceleration. Handeling was superb felt like small car despite its proportions.
