I have a 1998 VW Golf MK 4 1.4i S. Car runs lovely, however recently (last 3 weeks or so)it has started playing up when I go to start it in the mornings, or if it has been standing, ie when i try and start it after i finish work.

This morning i had to turn it over about 5 time before i could start it, sometimes its only a couple of times and it starts, other times it starts first time?! As i say the car when started runs lovely, i had the plugs coil packs and leads changed when car was serviced in June so i cant believe any of these are the problem.

Does anyone have any ideas, or is it just the damp weather we have been having recently.

Any ideas greatly appreciated as always guys!

The first step is a fault code read, it may just be a faulty coolant temperature sender. When you try to start it, does it just crank over and you stop turning it or does it fire up and die?

The engine cranks over and i stop turning it. When it does fire up, its fine and doesnt die, idles smoothly and no stuttering or anything like that.

I thought it might just be the damp weather we have been having as only started happening in the last 3 weeks or so. As i say most of the time it starts first time or second time of turning over.

OK, a fault code read first then. Come back to us with the results.
