so di what you said last night - here is the result :

started the car from cold (no AC running) - both fans came and stayed on. Once at 90C on the gauge from a fast idle (3000RPM) the fans doubled in speed. After 10mins still running at double speed - same at 20mins. Both stayed on permanentlyat double speed until i switched the car off

is this likely to cost me a lot of £'s at audi? is a lot of labour/time involved to replace failed components

OK, you need to find out why the fans are running when the car is cold.
It could be a sensor or relay, I think the relay is built into the fans, which makes it expensive.
You could try disconnecting the temp. switch in the rad.

Thanks for info - looks like im over a barrell as i happy with the basics on maintenance but dont have the knowledge beyond that. plus with a very active 1yr old have no time to do investigation which is very frustrating - looks like im going to have to leave it to them

fingers crossed its the sensor - if it is - quick for them to replace? rough idea on the price? looks like im going to have to take the credit card with me on saturday. they said they only do small jobs on saturday ( initially im booked in for a brake fluid change) if its the sensor is it soething that can be done there and then?

thanks for all your info and help

I would take the car to a good VAG specialist garage rather then pay main dealer labour rates. By all means let them look at it on Sat. but I bet they book it in for a check in the week.

interesting reading. googled "fans on at cold start, audi A4" fair few results.

definitely related to the two areas you put it down to - looks like the thermoswitch on the radiator is quite a common component to fail - fairly cheap to get replaced.

fingers crossed thats the culprit the diagnose as faulty on saturday.

having read the threads you pointed me to - they all say to disconnect the switch as you do. im happy to try this but have no idea where it is - is it easy to get to - simple as unclipping?
