my 1998 2.4 A6 manual has got a clutch vibration on pulling away, the strange thing is that sometimes i can pull away with very little vibration (hardly notice it) but other times it vibrates like mad thro the whole car. I have tried different revs on pull away but makes no difference. Also seems worse when stuck in traffic.

is this my clutch on the way out ?

    any help appreciated,

    thanks

Hi mate, i had a similar problem which felt like prop shaft vibration when pulling away in first and a little in second gear. I thought the prop shaft bearings were on the way out. I took the car to a local Audi specialist for a cambelt and waterpump change (75k miles) and he had a good look for the source of the vibration.
He couldn't pin it on anything on the drive train although he said the clutch was slipping when you boot it in third!!. Oh well...i bought the car to tow a caravan so decided to have a clutch fitted. Next mornin i had a call saying the dual mass flywheel was in a state as it looked like it had been submerged. I gave the ok for a new flywheel and collected the car later that day....vibration free!!
Basically the most obvious offending item would be the clutch but i would put money on it being the flywheel.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers, Karl.
