I have just finished fitting a new cam belt to my Mk4 golf and everything runs ok but I have checked the tensioner today after 100miles or so and the tension on the belt has incresed i.e the tensioner seems to have moved slightly. I could understand if the tension had come off a little due to the belt stretching! will the tension increase when the engine gets hotter? does anyone know?

    Any opinions appreciated

also could anyone tell me what the criss-cross hatched part next to the notch on the tensioner is for? is this to indicate too little tension??

Adjust the tensioner in a clockwise direction the two notches should line up to obtain the correct tension, the criss cross pattern has no meaning, the tensioner adjusts according to the temperature and can seemingly change, but nothing to worry about,as long as you got the basic setting right
