    Hi,

I have an older copy of VAGCOM software from the 311.xx series. Is this safe to use with a 2006 Passat? I remember a warning message stating that in certain models/years the user could damage a controller simply by scanning it! I think this related to Airbags.

I don't want to pay for an updated version of software if the older version will do. I just want to edit a few convienece features and check fault codes should they ever arise.

Also on the VAGCOM website you can buy HEX, Key (KII) or Micro-CAN. I have a USB to serial adpater which I used with my 98 Polo. Is the connection on the passat not the same?

    Thanks for any help offered.

Short answer is no. 2005 onwards Passats use CANBUS, so therefore you'd need to upgrade to a CAN enabled version.

    Thanks HTH.

Does this mean I can still use the same cable but I just need a newer version of the software? What version of software would be suitable as my friend has a new version...

    Thanks

Anything over Release 607 should be fine, latest version is 908.

Just to confirm... The cable I currently have, which works with my 98 Polo, is ok to use with software 607 and above?

    Thanks again.

can enabled cables are only availiable from ross tech and there distributors

Directly on the first VAG-COM/VCDS page in our online shop system you'll find the US & Canada Application Charts for information regarding which interface will work with your north American model and the typical modules supported. Additionally there is the VCDS World Spec Compatibility Charts for all non-US models.

That should give you straight answers what systems support which models and which are best for your specific vehicle. However, to sum things up - if you want to be ready for your future VW/Audi and be able to work on other cars than your 2006 VW Passat (3C) the HEX+CAN systems will be optimal. If its just your 2006 VW Passat (3C) you plan working on, then the Micro-CAN systems will do the trick.
