  1. mk4 1.6 ignition coils failure - VW out of stock

My daughter has a 5 year old Golf 1.6 mk4, which is out of action with a failed ignition coil, which cannot be replaced as VW are out of stock nationally - have been for weeks, and are giving April 23 as when new stock MAY arrive. I understand that VW were replacing all 4 coils, on demand, free of charge, on cars under 5 years old, but my daughter's is now just a month or two older. (I saw a website post saying that there was a general recall to replace VW ignition coils in the US) A local VW agent won't book the car in without the needed parts available, and say they have many cars waiting for parts. An independent parts supplier sent ignition coils to a local VW specialist (not authorised) garage, he fitted these non-VW parts to my daughter's car, and they failed to work! Honorably, he made no charge for this. I was told that an improved design coil is what VW are waiting for.

I have much the same car, and paid over £200 for first one coil and then the other three to be replaced by an independent garage. The local VW agent says VW won't re-imburse me as my car is now well over 5 years old and the work was not done by a VW appointed garage.

Apart from feeling that my daughter is just going to have to wait very patiently, that VW service is poor, and that we'd never buy a VW again, I am not sure if there is anything we can do. Any suggestions?

  2. Fixed at last

Monday last week my daughter's car was fixed at last by Sheppards in Bishops Stortford, at half price. This was done a week earlier than the parts were expected to be delivered, thanks to our contacting VW Customer Service in Milton Keynes and their chasing actions. We have mixed feelings: car out of use for many weeks waiting for a part, paying half price for what sounds to have been done as part of a free recall in the USA, but car now usable.
