If the alternator has a free wheel, it could be the problem

To check it You will need to remove the poly-v-belt.Block the rotor in the alternator with something non conductive,(be careful, not to damage the rotor)you should be able to turn the pulley,in the one direction, without any resistance.

A failing alternator pulley/freewheel can cause a bit of a racket when stationary and also when turning the wheel, as it puts load on the aux belt. I believe you need a locking tool once you swing the tension roller out of the way with a wrench. Well, that's to get belt off. Maybe that will help to get you started.

the guy at the garage said when he revved it up to 2000rpm the noise went away. Surely if it was alternator free wheel it would be constant? The noise stops when driving above 30mph. Can u buy these free wheels anywhere?

When revved there is enough force in the belt to turn the pulley. Mine only made a noise when the engine idled, as yours is doing. VW dealer should be able to order any part for you.

The alternator pulley started failing just as I was looking to book the car in for the cambelt change, so had the VW specialist do it at the same time. Got a feeling it was about £120 for the pulley and labour.
