    Hi all,

I own an A4 Sport 130 in Metallic black. There are a few fine scratches around the doors and boot.

None of the scratches go to the undercoat or metal.

I want to polish them out but have had no success with normal cream polish or scratch removal paste.

I was told the best way was to use a polishing machine, such as a Cable 7424, since it roates much faster than a human ever could polish, and it slightly warms the paint causing the scratches to smooth out slightly.
    Is this true?

I took my car to an Audi dealers the other day for its service and I asked the service manager about this.
He said that Metallic painted Audis have a coat of very hard laquer over the top of the paint, and polishing it would not help at all. He just reccomended decent black car polish.

This frustrated me slightly, I was sure I could get these scratches out.

Does anyone else have experience with polishing scratches from a metallic painted car.

    thanks in advance

    Danny

Hi mate, av been a valeting for years now and the best way i find with bad scratches is to slighty flat it with 1500 wet and dry paper then use a polishing machine with g3 cutting compound and water but if ther just fine ones then the machine should take them out, any good local valeting place should do it for about £40 ta £50 and it'll be gleaming.

The guy at Audi doesn't know what he's talking about. Using coloured-coded polishes is sooooooooo 1980's!

Basically a scratch in the top coat or lacquer will catch the light in certain conditions. The only way to remove is effectively to polish it out (feathers the scratch and reduces the depth of the lacquer), initially with a more aggressive compound, then with a finer polish. Ideally this needs to be done with a rotary polisher. It doesn't have to be a top-of-the-range porter and cable machine. There are other machines on the market for under £100 that can deliver acceptable results.

I removed minor scratches from my wife's A2 which is finished in cobalt blue, which is almost black. Used Menzerna 203 compound, which is marketed as a one-step-compound. Worked for me, is self-lubricating, and can be cleaned off easily before applying a sealing wax. Depending how big your budget is, and your patience, you could opt for Menzerna 85RD, then Menzerna 85RD Final Finish.

    Thanks for the advice guys.

Can anyone reccomend a cheap but half-decent Polisher / Buffer that has delivered them good resuts?

Are any of these any good?

Silverline looks okay. The other two won't be up to the job.
