Exhaust gas warning light (Diesel + DPF)

I just had the amber exhaust gas emission warning light come on permanently (you know, the one you have to look up in the manual because it looks like a helicopter and is top left in the speedo!)

The only significant thing is I filled up with half a tank of diesel 30 miles previous so I hope its not another contaminated fuel saga (Waitrose, Swaffham, Norfolk).

Any ideas? Lambda sensor failure? DPF problem? the car is a May 07 SEL Estate 170PS DPF with 30,000 on the clock.

    Hi Sathound

Mine did that a couple weeks back (07 sport 140bhp), dealer fixed it under warranty, fuel temperature sensor and wiring replaced

I had the same problem, same model, similar mileage, exhaust pressure sensor replaced under warranty.

    Thanks guys,

The car is booked in for Monday and I'll update the thread with the outcome for the benefit of the forum search.

Re: Exhaust gas warning light (Diesel + DPF)

The exhaust gas warning failure appears sorted. It took an overnight stay for the car + courtesy car due to parts ordering. The sensor warning light (the engine/helicopter amber one at the 2000 rpm position in the rev counter)has gone out after apparent replacement of the sensor. I have no confirmation of any ECU reprogramme and the car appears to drive normally with no apparent loss of power or torque on the normal 25 mile commute, just the same old aggressive 170PS turbo lag and crap 1st gear torque as ever.

I will update if necessary over the next few days experience.

If this happens again try a long high rev blast... lots of turbo. This can help clean out the DPF.

Re: Exhaust gas warning light (Diesel + DPF)

This warning light came on yesterday and stayed on together with `Fault Garage` in the centre display. Overnight stop didnt clear it. No effect on driving. Was tempted to do as suggested by Martin above but the fact that the manual mentions driving cautiously AND because my 07 SEL (15Kmiles) is under warranty caused me to take it to VW to be fixed. They just phoned to say `Differential Pressure Sensor faulty`, none in stock so will get car back tomorrow. If the fix details change I will update the thread otherwise assume its as above.
So far its sensors that are failing rather tha the item they sense. At least thats going to be cheaper if it stays that way once the warranty ends

Re: Exhaust gas warning light (Diesel + DPF)

Had the same warning light come on in the wife's 140 TDi Sport a number of times and had it reset, but it came on about 10 days ago and the fault was down to a faulty turbo. Watch out for prices, main dealer wanted 1115.00 + Vat just to supply, in the end I got it from a specialist for 547 + Vat and they were both Garrett turbos. I would add that the car is has nearly reached 100.000 miles and she gets on average 58mpg, when I drive it not so good 45 mpg must be the heavy right foot. Had Passats for over 27 years and can not fault them overall, still running a 85 GL5 Estate that I had from new, must admit it is more reiable than the new one!!

Re: Exhaust gas warning light (Diesel + DPF)

    Hi folks

Tonight while driving my engine [140 Tdi] died completely and without warning - engine exhaust gas warning light with "fault garage" came on. Car would not start again - engine turns but makes no effort to fire. Had to get a transporter to recover car.

Any ideas what might be wrong - I have owned the car from new and it came out of warranty at the end of Feb. - fully serviced etc. - in fact last service was 6 weeks ago.
