    Hello
Have had to buy a new remote fob for my 98 passat. Its the type where the key and immobiliser can be separated from the bit with the two buttons. Can anyone with vag-com code the new unit to the car or just a main dealer??

    cheers

I can do it with vag com. You need your 4 digit access code to your car's ECU though.

would this work (pinched off web)

    VW/AUDI/SEAT/SKODA

    Remote Control Programming (1997 ON)

    Procedure

    1. Switch Ignition ON and leave the key in the ignition.

    2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the Drivers door using a second
    key.

    3. Using the remote control press the Unlock button once, and the horn
    will sound once.

    4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate the coding
procedure. The remote control will now be programmed.

NOTE : When performing programming on additional remotes the procedure
is the same, except you press the unlock button 2, 3 or 4 times for the
    different remote.

For example : If programming 2 remotes press the unlock button twice with
a 1 second interval between each press, repeat for 3 and 4 remotes.

    5. Switch Ignition OFF.

    6. Remove key from ignition and check for operation.

    7. The coding procedure can be repeated up to 4 times for additional remotes.

    8. The ignition must be switched OFF between programming each remote
    control.

    Remote Control Erasing (1997 ON)

    Procedure

    1. Switch Ignition ON and leave the key in the ignition.

    2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the Drivers door using a second
    key.

    3. Press the remote control unlock button 5 times in 1 second intervals.
    A short horn will sound.

    4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate memory
    erase.

    5. Switch ignition OFF, all remotes are now erased.

    Models Covered:
    · Lupo
    · Polo
    · Golf

That is for remotes only - You need to get the ECU/dash to recognise the key's themselves if you wish to use them as ignition keys, not remotes. Once they're set as ignition keys then the above can be applied.

Do you do any rock climbing / mountaineering?

I can never remember if the transponder is in the bit with the blade or in the chunky bit. If it's in the blade, then I expect the key still starts the car, but will not open the doors? In which case, the bit above you posted looks like the right way to go.

I tested this with my audi key the other day, the two parts are seperate. to make sure take the key apart and the car should still start with the key part.

    done!

That bit up top didn't seem to work, but the 'lock the door with the key and then press unlock' as per the owners manual did. That bit may have helped but jobs a good un'
