    Hello All,

I have been still collecting informations to build my own T5 camper. I am looking for possibilities to have 24V DC electrical system for leisure equipments inside of T5. I think that there is only one way to charge this 24V DC system while engine is running . It is installing second 24V charging alternator on T5. I can not find out any possible power take off point on engine of T5 to add pulley to run second charging alternator. If anyone knows a way, it will be helpful .
    Thanks in advance
    Teo

if you really want 24v , then i would fit a split charge to a 12v battery , then run an inverter off this to power a 24v charger, this charging the 24v supply. you then have the benefit of a 240v supply as well for charging phones, laptops etc, or running a kettle or microwave if you get a big inverter. this would be a lot cheaper and easier than trying to mount a 24v alternator on the engine.
    hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply . I think using 24V just to have less power loss on cables according to 12V system. Yours suggestion is better than installing second alternator, but I will have power loss on 12/24 V changer. Better to forget 24 Volt and use conventional 12V system with larger diameters as most people do.

The main advantage of using 24v instead of 12v is that your inverter will draw half the amps of the 12v thus making your batteries last longer.... (1kw load at 12v approx 84 amps, at 24v only 42 amps...)the split charge option and a second 12v system is the best option but as said in previous post you will need to buy a dedicated 24v mains charger

basically you use the vans alternator to charge a second 12v battery through a split charger so the engine battery is not affected by any drainage in the leisure compartment, this is charged when the engine is running and cos its on a split charger it will never drain the engine battery... this second 12v battery powers the 12v mains inverter which is used to power the 24v battery charger for your 24v leisure battery system.... bit of a long winded explanation but hope its of some help..
