ABS warning light & flashing brake light

Hi, I have a VW sharan 1.9TDI 130 2004. The ABS warning light came on followed closely by the Brake light flashing, then the speedo stopped working then the indicators (hazard lights work ok). The Fuel guage then started doing strange things- needle would float back and forward between 1/4 tank and empty and the refuel warning light kept coming on. been to the garage fluid levels seem ok so they are suggesting new dash! Any other ideas before I spend £500?

Yes, i did.

For me it turned out to be an expensive excercise which had the complete car stripped down.. The problem was that one of the electric plugs holding the wires into the back of the speedo worked loose and started to short out.

The plug that connects the speedo/drivers display unit had worked loose and started to short out and melt. finding the issue was what cost the money but take a look at the main drivers display unit to ensure the plug isnt causing the short, you might need to take the dash apart.
