    Hi

I have a 2001 A6 1.8T that has done 107,000 miles. It has been regularly serviced but not in the last year. Although I have had the oil pump replaced. I have been checking my average MPG and it is around 22 to24 mpg. Is this normal as i have never realy noticed what it has been doing since I got it. I plan to take out the maf and replace the air filter. Will this improve MPG? I tend to drive carefully but only do short journeys of about 4 miles to work.

Any advice on how I could improve the fuel consumption without spending a fortune would be gratefully received.

    Cheers
    Phill

I'd say that's about right for short 4 mile trips. It's not really warming up properly. Plus at this time of year you'll drop a couple anyway.

I'm driving the 2.8 quattro and town driving gives low mpg. A mixture of town, short M-way and mainly back roads returns about 29 - 30 mpg for me at this time of year. 32 - 34 in summer.

Trips on the M-way deliver 37+ easily

22 is too low either you have the ECU element of the temp sensor faulty or the MAF is failing and it is over fuelling slightly Locally I never get less than 30 and on a sensible run 37 and a long motorway run 300 miles plus just over 40, ( 40.2 mpg 330 miles ) even I was implessed with that, Shell fuel and Edge 5/30 oil. Less with Tesco fuel ( 38.7) same run. Regards Peter

cheers lads. I plan to get the MAF out and give it a clean, I have had a look on other posts and have guessed that the MAF is behind the air filter? I am not sure though where the ECU is and what it does. Any tips on checking my ECU for faults would really help me?????

    Cheers
    Phil

4 mile trips in winter through town I thought would return pretty poor mpg?......

Yes the MAF is the part connected just after the air filter.

And I also experience lower mpg if using Tesco fuel. Their 99 octane is definitely not a geniune 99 octane that's for sure. Shell's Super Unleaded gives very good results. Works out cheaper too.
