I recently bought this almost perfect 2005 Xtra high miler for a song. It has little SH, but I have taken this chance before on two previous occasions (100 avant & 1.9Tdi avant). I took it immediately to my usual independent for a thorough going over and all it needed was a fuel filter. I pointed out a drive through vibration @ 50-60, and they gave me it back saying "fixed with wheel balance". It's not, and now it's between 40 and 50 mph - commuting speed, annoyingly. This and some other stuff has made me lose confidence in the independent with whom I have been doing business for 8 years or so.

Anyone any ideas before I take it to Kwikfit for their chance? Anyone know a truly honest reliable intelligent garage north of Perth, south of Inverness? This car also has the S-line suspension and very low profiles which are practically new.

Pity, because otherwise it's a joy, and when you buy cheap luxury you have to be prepared to take good care, but that doesn't stretch to the potted palms at the local rip-off Audi franchise in Oilcity.

if it was 50-60 before the rebalance, and is now at 40-50,then i would say try another
    tyre place.
i find the small guys down here are better than the "supermarket" types.

    Hi,

I agree, if a re-balance has shifted the speed range then its the balance at fault.

Best place for blalance I have used is the on in Dundee, on the road between Broughty Ferry and the Tay Bridge. Think its Hi-Q, on the left heading from B Ferry to the bridge just next to the 30 mph sign IIRC. You cant miss it

Might be worth checking if the tyres have any significant radial runout (ie aren't properly round). I had trouble tracking down a persistent vibration (at slightly higher speeds than yours though) despite careful rebalancing, and it turned out to be a single tyre with a significant 'hop' in it. Replaced the tyre... bingo! No vibration.

Not all balancing places can check for runout. Worth asking.
