All the other gauges and display on the instrument pack work except for the fuel gauge. I have read up and found some other people with similar problems which has intimated that it could be a problem with the fuel sender unit.

Is this the most likely cause and how easy is it to change or rectify?

Has anyone any information about changing this? I'm in no way a mechanic so is this something I should get fixed at a garage or can it be done fairly simply with a replacement unit?

    Thanks in advance,

    Daz

A new fuel gauge is £25 from VW and takes about an hour to fit but the sender is between £50 and £70 depending on which type of Golf 2 it is. To be honest in 25 years of working on Golf 2’s I have hardly ever seen a gauge or sender fail but a competent VW specialist would be able to test the system to determine which is required. It could also be the voltage regulator on the back of the dash which is £10 from VW but this should also cause temperature gauge problems. We call them the Space Invader and when you look at one, you would understand why, if you are old enough to remember the computer game.

Don’t take it to the VW amin dealer, most mechanics there were in nappies when they stopped making the Golf 2. Find yourself a good local VW specialist; most places have at least one.
