Today my son was driving his two months old car when there was a complete loss of power and he was seriously hit from behind. The conditions were dry and fortunately he was going slowly. Has anybody else experienced this problem.

Yes, but a bit more description would help. Like, did the power just fade, or drop off suddenly as if he had turned the switch? What speed? Was he pushing the pedal for more power, or just cruising along when it all went awry? Any previous symptoms, odd electrical events, strange gearbox happenings, etc? Any sounds, or did it all go quiet, including the radio?

If it's a brand spanking new car you can rule out all the age related stuff like a gummed up turbo, but it's a serious issue that you ought to be asking the dealer to plug the diagnostics in to look at and diagnose. If there is a vehicle fault, there is a liability, even though whoever hit him in the rear is now probably on the spot. If it had happened on a fast, greasy bend he could have ended up in a ditch with no-one else to blame.

I do hope your son is okay.

    Dear Teflon,
Thanks for your reply and concerned words. Fortunately my son's injuries appear to be restricted to whiplash on neck and back and being in shock.
He was travelling slow having just driven on to an island when suddenly the car which is automatic suddenly stopped (he described it as being as if it had jumped out of gear and stopped dead). It happened at 1.13 pm and weather was dry. The guy behind him just ploughed into his rear and almost lifted the car up. The other drivers insurance have admitted full liability for the damage he caused. Our problem now is that we do not want the car back, instead we have demanded a new replacement from Audi. Audi down loaded the info in our presence but could only get the after impact information - even down to the driver's seatbelt being at fault because it was set up to tight. Clearly the sale of goods act comes into play but of greater concern to us is our fear for others who may be facing the same problem. The thoughts of it being on a busy motorway with a huge lorry behind or a baby being on the back seat doesn't bear thinking about, so any suggestions or knowledge of similar circumstances would be really valauable. Thanks Tony

Can't help I'm afraid, but I hope someone else can. I've had fading power loss on an Audi TDi and a complete shutdown in the outside lane of the motorway (on another model), but nothing like what you describe.

Good luck with the problem. Thought about getting AA or RAC legal people involved, if you are a member?
