There is a plastic pipe spiggot that bolts to the engine block, the thermostat is located in the flared bit adjacent to the block. Follow the rad hose back to the block to locate.

In terms of renewing it and getting at it, I did it on my old PD engined Golf and found it quite easy once the alternator was out of the way. I cannot comment exactly on the Audi but would assume the same.

from what i have read, the thermostat doesn't give much problems, being a different design to what you will have ever seen before.
are you sure the problem lies with the thermostat?
follow the hoses from the rad back to engine, locate a plastic housing,i believe on the side of the engine rather than in the normal position on the top of the head.(it's german).be carefull when replacing thermostat being sure to engage the thing properly, and don't overtighten the plastic housing, apparently they are so easily cracked.
    good luck,
    stewy.
first time i was up a ladder i was down a well
