VW golf 05 grating noise

Hi everyone!I drive a golf tdi 05 plate and for the past 5 weeks have experienced intermittent grating/dragging noise at lower speeds and occasionally when turning corners.The sound seems to be coming from offside front. Some days nothing, other days want to wear sunglasses and sink down into my seat as the sound can be rather embarassing!!!Took car to local mechanic yesterday but typically when he drove it couldnt hear a thing!!He did say he thought my rear passenger wheel bearing might be on way out but reluctant to change if thats not what causing sound!! Any suggestions would be gratefully received before I take out a mortgage for the Volkswagen dealer!!!Cheers.
