Hi Guys, I want to change the wiper motor and linkage in my 1996 A4. I've got a replacement from a breakers yard and its a simple three bolt job. However I cant get the old part out without removing some other parts that are blocking it in. Can anyone tell me which parts I need to remove or loosen off so that I can complete the job? Thanks a million. Ted.

Hi Kenny, you are a star but I've already worked it out by looking closely at the repacement parts. For the benefit of others this is what happened: -

I realised that it was necessary to separate the motor from the linkage before making the exchange. Thats all reasonably straightforward; there are three 10 mm hex topped bolts connecting the motor case to the linkage base plate and one 13mm nut conecting the linkage drive arm to the motor itself. The wiring is all on a single male female plug connection so thats a doddle. When the new motor and linkage are in position they go back together easilly enough and then the whole lot is bolted back into place with three 13mm hex bolts. Before trying to connect the linkage turn the wipers on and make sure the motor stops in the park position. The only tricky bit now is reconnecting the linkage so that the wipers move in the correct arc when its all back together again. I eventually realised that you can feel the movement of the drivers side spindle between finger and thumb of the right hand at the same time as depressing the wiper control arm down for a single wipe with the left hand. If it goes clockwise first and then anti clockwise its in the wrong position so you have to keep adjusting the central nut that connects the linkage drive arm to the motor until the wiper spindle goes only anti clockwise immediatly before stopping and going clockwise. Only then do you know you can put the wiper arms back on in the park position. Like most Audi things its very well made and very satisfying when it works out well. Hope this all makes sense its a saving of about £200 if you get the parts for circa £50 so well worth the agg. TedG.
