I held out until 60000 miles, and then took my A2 to a local bloke £250 for replacement.

My experience with Audi idealership is very negative. This time last year the main beam went on the way to work. As it gets dark at around 4pm I thought I sould get the bulb replaced that day, so popped in to the nearest dealership. I was told the whloe unit would need replacing at a cost of £100 +, would have to return the followong day as the part would need to be ordered in. According to the service guy the back of the unit had corroded. When i enquire why, I was told this was because I had been driving for some time on main beam eith the bulb out!

I had the cambelt changed on my 1.4 TDi 90 at about 46,000 miles. When I queried it, I was told that the 3 cylinder engine puts greater strain on the belt than the 4-cylinder 1.9 it is derived from, because of the extra vibration. I don't know if it is true, but as the belt was also 5 years old, I was not minded to push my luck anyway. Manchester Audi did it for the fixed-fee £329 deal, which was £60 cheaper than a local independent specialist had quoted me.

I've always been very pleased with MA's service and I say this as just a customer, no other connection with them at all.

I use a specialist VW/Audi garage in Cardiff, from all the thing i have read the quality of service there and the specialist knowledge i wouldn't trust Audi with a barge pole!
What was the name of that dealer mate? :-)

The A2 is not such a hard job. I will be attempting one of mine in a few weeks time so will let you know how I get on. The last time one of mine was done I paid £293 at a local mechanics with a genuine water pump.
    Most independents are around £300-£350.

Perhaps a tutorial or a 'How To' to show the rest of us the process/procedure? as your doing it, that would be useful and nice

For info, my VW dealer in Herts has it for £319 inc on their Audi A2 Servicing Costs page. Dunno if that includes water pump or not.

But as ever, it's always worth trying to negotiate if you talk to the right person.
